Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

First I want to thank all of your for the Kind, Understanding, and
Helpful responses to my Plead for Help!
To those with the suggestion of a better email program or service, and
to download an Internet Browser, here is the list of what I already have
and don't use to their capacity:
Netscape Navigator 3.04 Browser
Netscape Communicator 4.05 Browser
Internet Explorer 4.01 Browser
Amaya Browser
Outlook Express Email program
Two Hotmail Email Accounts
mICQ Chat and Email Program
And I have Windows 98 OS, (converted hard drive to 32 bit FAT)
which keeps my computer running at Optimal performance and speed
It has just been more convenient for me to use the Free Email Service
and software provided by my ISP. I set my Email program to logon to the
server collect my email, and disconnect when finished. The program logs
on evey 45 minutes between 6:00 AM and 2:00 AM, and every 1.5 hours
between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM.
If I use the Internet Browsers, I have to log onto the Internet
every time I want to get my eamil, and I can't set it up to log on and
log off automatically at varied time intervals. Convenience was my
intension, and it back fired on me.
Here is some Good News, (email lost at 12:01 AM 8 Sep 1998)
93% of all mailing Lists and Digests have been recovered from
Rootsweb Archives.
5% of mailing Lists and Digests were retrieved from
the ISP Server.
55% of the personal Email Messagae that were lost have been replaced.
The remaining 45% are on hard copy printouts.
Thanks to all of the people I have corresponded with, shared
data with, and worked together with to solve or break down a brick wall,
I am in a very good mood and fairly happy with the association with all
of my fellow genealogy researchers on the Internet.
Have a nice day,

Thanks. Ronda Cates
This is not an admonishment at all but a simple friendly reminder to
all. Floppy disks are inexpensive and sometimes even free with
rebates. EVERY day, after receiving any genealogy e-mail and/or
adding data to my master copies, the last thing I do before shutting
down the computer is to slip a floppy in and COPY. Quick, simple and
it allows ME to control my precious data, not to rely on someone else
and their equipment. Just a thought...

Dear Cousins,
I never thought I would ever be put in the situation that
some on the List have been in, but It has happened. When I was
having
the computer whoas, may data was accessible, retrieveable, and
saveable.
Last night though the worse kind of night mare occurred. Around
midnight, I had just retrieve about 35 email messages, had read one
and
had written a response. Sitting in my out box, were seven other
messages to be sent. Well, when I connected to my ISP server to send
the email, the server decided it was time to upgrade my software. It
has
upgraded before without any adverse effects, but not lasst night.
The
program deleted (erased, obliterated) over 5,000 saved email messages
containing all of the genealogy data I have received through the
mailing
lists and personal contacts during the past 6-1/2 months. And it
also
deleted my address books containing 267 adresses.
I need your help! Anyone and everyone that I have been
in
contact with during the past several months that I have shared my
data
with, you have share your data with me, and we have worked together
to
fill a gap, will you please send me the data? The most of the email
mailing individual and Digest postings I can retrieve from the
Rootsweb
Archives, but the personal messages are not that easy.
I have used to email program through my ISP server as a
more
convenient tmethod, as I don't have to be on the Internet to use it.
But now, I am going to switch and use either the email programs in my
browsers or install the Juno program and use it. This has been one
very
costlya and expensive lesson to learn about the reliable services of
the
Free Local Email Service and Servers.
God Bless you all and have a very nice day,

Hi All,
There have been a lot of obscene messages & advertising being sent to
the Cate List this week. Fortunately, Rootsweb is doing a great job &
catching them before it get to the list, however, I am getting them
as listowner.
I am closing the Cate List so only subscribers who will be able to
send messages to the List. It will not affect you in anyway.

Dear Sharon Hewitt,
Josiah Cate's first wife's name was Martha!
His second wife's name was also Martha! She was Martha P. Wallace and
she was
my great great grandmother! I don't know the place or date of the first
marriage, BUT
the second was to Martha P. Wallace in Butler Co., AL on 16-JUN-1861.
Would like to exchange info with you and anyone else on the list who is
related.
Both Robert Lee Cates and all his half brothers and sisters except
Josiah Seaborn
Cates are buried in Gann Cemetery north of Lufkin, Angelina Co., TX.
We have a copy of his funeral record, in case you are interested.
BTW, Martha P.( Wallace) Cates is also buried there next to my great
grandmother,
Martha R. (Cates) Kimbrough.

Notes for THOMAS HERSCHELL PARKERSON:
I called Mr. Parkserson "Grandpa". Grandmother married him when I was about 6 or 7 year old, and he quickly became my grandpa. He was half indian and had worked on the railroad. We used to take long walks together, and he let play with his tools. He gave me a barlow pocket knife which I still have today.
Notes for JAMES PORTER KILPATRICK:
Jim Kilpatrick was my grandfather. I never knew him except from what I learned of him from my mother. I have a child's rocking chair that he made for my mother when she was very little. It is completed hand made (no power tools) down to the hand split hickory strip bottom. That took a lot of love. Grandpa is buried next to my grandmother and his first wife in the Kilpatrick Cemetery near Flintville, Lincoln Co., TN.

Then Andy and Lena moved in with Mr. Cochran (of Cochran's General Store) and took care of him until his death. In return they were left the Cochran house and the land surrounding it. Hi folks:
These are no kin to me, but in cataloging this book, I found a CATE.
Murray County Heritage / compiled by The Murray County History Committee
(1987, 5th printing 1997)
[This Murray Co. is in SW Georgia]
p. 643 Mark M. Leonard's children by his 2nd wife, Mary George:
(1) Leona married Robert (Bob) Vining who owned a wholesale business in
Dalton.
(a) Robert L. married Kate Lynn Jefferson. He was postmaster of
Chatsworth for many years and is now retired. Judge Robert Vining, Jr.
of Dalton is their son. He married Martha Sue CATE and has a daughter,
Laura.
p. 602 Anna Harper married John Leonard. Their children were (1) Seth
Leonard, (2) Ike Richardson Leonard, (3) Joseph K. Leonard, (4) Leo
Leonard, (5) Frank Leonard, (6) Henry Leonard, (7) Claude Leonard
married Dorothy Hardwick and later Nell Teasley Lotspeich, with one
step-daughter, Helen CATES.
I found a census of my gr,gr, grandfather John Mathis or Mathew CATES in 1870,
Georgia Township, Jasper County, MO., when he was 19, which is about right
because we always thought he was born about 1850 in Joplin, Jasper Co., MO.
and that census would put him at 1851. So I think it is my gr, gr, gr
grandfather.
It lists his parents as Samuel CATES and Sarah, wife both born in Tennessee.
Samuel is listed as 63 yrs old in 1870 (putting him born about 1807 in TN),
and Sarah is listed as 57 in 1870 (putting her born about 1813 in TN). He is
also listed as a farmer in this MO census.
In the MO 1850 Census index there is a Samuel CATES listed in Madison Co.
Don't know if this is the same Samuel or not. Also found land records for
Samuel CATES in Jasper Co., MO for 12/1/1853 and 9/15/54. This also I can't
prove is the same Samuel CATES.
Soooo, my question is, does anyone have a Samuel CATES or Sarah born in TN??
OR my next question, since I don't know which County they were from, does
anyone have any ideas how to find them in TN?
I will also post this on the TN mail list.
Thanks for any help

Hi fellow rooters,
I have noticed on many of the lists that people are having a
ddifficult time in finding the locations of early records. Many people
that have inherited genealogy data from other family members or early genealogy
workups by other genealogists, generally have misleading information. I
had problems in trying to locate general statistics on my ancestry, as I
was looking in local county records for the pertenant data. Then one
day while trying to locate data on my TN ancester prior to the
establishment of the state and various counties, I realized that I had
to research the districts rather than the present day counties for the
information.
Here is a little information for researchers looking for ancesters in
Virginia and Kentucky, also parts of North Carolina and Tennessee.
>From the book "Logan County Kentucky", History of Logan County Kentucky.
Logan County is one of the early counties of Kentucky, being the 13th of
120 counties of the commonwelth. It was originally formed in 1792, the
year in which Kentucky became a state. Kentucky itself was at first
part of Virginia. Fincastle County, Virginia, from which Kentucky was
formed was the frontier county of Virginia from 1772 through 1776. By
as act of the legislature, Virginia Fincastle County was dissolved
effective December 31, 1776 and one part of it became Kentucky County,
Virginia bounded as follows;
All that part which lies to the South and westward of a line
beginning on the Ohio River, at the mouth of the Great Sandy Creek and
running up the same and the main or Northerly Branch thereof to the
Great Laurel Ridge or Cumberland Mountains; thence southwesterly along
said mountains to the line of North Carolina. The Northern limit was
the Ohio River to the Western limit being the Mississippi River.
In May 1780, Kentucky County was divided into three new
counties, Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. In 1784, Nelson County, the
fourth County, was formed out of Jefferson County and in 1785, Bourbon County,
the fifth county, was cut out of Fayette, while Mercer County and Madison
Counties came out of Lincoln.
Kentucky became a state on June 1, 1792 and the first
legislature meeting that year added seven new counties to the original
nine. Washington 10th, Shelby 11th, Scott 12th, Logan 13th, Clark 14th,
Hardin 15th, and Green 16th.
Logan became a county on September 1, 1792. It was cut out of
Lincoln County and it ran from Elk Lick, on the Little Barren River, to
the North Carolina line, thence westward to the Mississippi River,
thence along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to the Green River, thence
along the Green River to Elk Lick on the Little Barren River.
Twenty-eight counties have been formed wholly or in part from Logan
County between 1796 and 1860. Here is a list of a few of the early
counties:
1796 Christian and Warren
1798 Livingston, Muhlenburg, Barren, and Henderson
1806 Hopkins
1809 Caldwell
1810 Butler
1811 Union
1815 Allen
1819 Simpson and Todd
1820 Monroe and Trigg
The first settlement in Logan County was Maulding's Station on the north
fork of the Red River in the 1780. The first built road in Logan County
went from Henderson, in the North on the Ohio River, South through
Russellville to Nashville.
The first county seat for Kentucky County, was St. Asaph's Station,
the first court was held in July 1778, with the clerk's office being in
Harrodsburg.
Prior to the establishment of a Capitol City for the Commonwealth State
of Kentucky in 1792, land claims and warrants were filed in Richmond, Virginia.
The first road built through Kentucky was the Zanesville-Nashville
Pike (present day US68), which went from Zanesville, Ohio, crossed the
Ohio River at Limestone (present day Maysville, KY), went down through
Paris, Lexington, Harrodsburg, Cambellsville, Bowling Green, Russellville,
and on to Nashville.
The Commonwealth State of Tennesse was not established until
1802. Prior to statehood, it was a part of North Carolina, which was
divided into districts. Nashville was the farthest west fort or outpost
during the late 1700's as my ancesters wintered there prior to
continuing on their westward and northern journey.
West Virginia became a commonwealth state as a direct result of
the Civil War in 1863.
I hope this information will help somewhat for those trying to
locate records and areas to research for their ancesters.
Have a nice dday,
Don Stanton
