"Charles, Dawson & The Southern Lawrence books both say Charles is the son
of Joseph & Ann. This comes from the will of Joseph 24 Dec 1793 naming
wife Ann; sons Stephen, Charles, & Solomon; daughters Elizabeth & Sale
(Sarah). Documentation by Dr. Banks Cates has this Charles in Orange Co.
land records living on land left by his father until he died before 1820.
His wife Nancy is the head of the household in 1820: 3 females 45 & over, 1
female 16-26, & 1 female 0-10. Children of this Charles & Nancy Ann Dixon
are:
Robert B. b. 1793 mar. Margaret Carrigan Nancy A. b. 1795 mar.
Thomas C. Cate Reuben b. 15 jan 1796 mar. Amanda Wilkinson
Charles Jr. b. 1800 mar. Elizabeth Lloyd (Grainger Co.)
I have Banks file on this if you want it.

"Hi, I'm fairly new to the list. This is my first posting. I am trying to
confirm that my Thomas Cates is the son of Charles Cates and Elizabeth
Lloyd. Does anyone know of this Thomas? Details are:
Thomas Cates, born TN 1835. Married Sarah E., born 1839, TN
1860 Census - District 5, Rutledge Post Office, Grainger County, TN Living
with Thomas and Sarah and their two children was Elizabeth Cates,
widow. Elizabeth's age is difficult to read, but I have guessed that it is
46.
Thomas and Sarah's children:
Charles Henry b. Feb 1856, TN
Mary A. b. Aug 1859 TN
Martha b. 1866 Indiana
Reubin b. 1874 MO
Lumie b. 1879 MO
1880 Census - Madison Township, Polk County, MO Thomas and family (without
Elizabeth)
(One more interesting fact - Charles Henry Cates married Martha Elizabeth
Needham, whose mother was Nancy Acuff)
Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Linda Cates"
=======================================================================
In I. above, Roberta reports that Charles Cates married Nancy N. Dixon and
their son, Charles Jr. married in Grainger Co. TN in 1800.
In II. above, Linda reports that Charles Henry Cates married Martha
Elizabeth Needham whose mother was Nancy Acuff and that Thomas and family
lived in Polk Co. MO in 1880.
My GGGrandmother Rebecca (Elizabeth?) Cates was born in NC 20 Aug 1806.
She married Jeremiah Acuff in Grainger Co. TN 12 Dec 1826. They named
their first child William DIXON Acuff, b. 26 Dec 1827. Is there any
tie-in between his middle name and the family of Nancy N. Dixon?
Rebecca and Jeremiah moved to Polk/Greene Co. MO in 1836 with children
William Dixon; Martha, b. 1830; Nelson, b. 1831; Marshall, b. 1834; (and
possibly daughter Pickway). Probably, a Cates brother of Rebecca was
already in Polk/Greene Co. when they arrived in 1836 as Jeremiah reported
they met a brother-in-law who had come out earlier. Who could this have
been?
Jeremiah, William Dixon, Nelson and Marshall Acuff all served in the Union
Army. Rebecca bore additional children there, dying and being buried in
Turkey Creek Cemetery in Walnut Grove, MO 27 Jan 1882.
The Cates and Acuffs seem to have intermarried at least twice.
Jeremiah's mother was also nicknamed Nancy Acuff. Cates and Acuffs moved
from Grainger Co. TN to Polk/Greene Co MO. I feel there must be some
tie-in between Rebecca and the others. Any suggestions anyone?

John Shroeder

I really messed up tonight, the message kept vanishing and I kept writing
and I should be embarrassed but I am not more tired than embarrassed. Sorry
to have been so disruptive, a good night to all....
Ann
Hi Everyone & Roberta,
I lost the message a second time, so much for the message...I still like the
Roberta Remark, "it might help all of our John problems"....I would like to
know about the survey, could we get it any other way than through the VA
Archives. Roberta on Prodigy they did have people who offered if they were
going, I will share the cost with you, unless we are into mega $.
If this John Cate was our John Sr where was he born, he had to have come
from VA. or NC and he obviously has a son born in NC which sources are
available. If John Cate was married in 1787 that still leaves, John Jr NC,
1771; Samuel Cate 1773, Virginia; Thomas Cate 1776, Virginia; Priscilla Cate
1780, Washington Co VA, where was that found? Jesse Cate, Washington Co VA
1780/1790 (that is such a span of guess work, it has been like that)aebp;
Anna Cate 1785, Washington Co VA: Mary 1790, James 1790 both Washington Co
VA; Joshua Cate 1792 same as above; Elijah 1794 Jefferson Co TN. & Rachel
Cate 1795, Jefferson Co TN. What reasoning do we have that John Cate Jr was
born in NC. and none of the other children?
Rachel Cate mar: Alexander ENGLAND, I have mentioned before, that one of my
dearest friends in Knoxville and married a man here in FL where I am is a
Foster, her mother was Mary ENGLAND and she was of the ENGLAND'S of John
CATE Sr. Mrs. Foster was much older than most woman in that time period,
she and her family must have come from considerable money, no one talked to
children about this. She could not drive a car as she had always had a
driver and after she married she took a taxi or a bus. A intelligent lady,
volunteered at school and I think one of the hospitals, loved the opera and
bridge. I think Payne England was raised by Joshua CATE? My friend's sister
did the genealogy of their family a long time ago, a large age difference in
Jody and her sister and brother. I know first hand they were indeed in
Tenn. that the England's were in Knoxville and they still are. The line has
yet to stop. We I don't know if you received this or what but I found this
one and will send as is....Forbid I touch another thing tonight. Ann

In regards to the Washington Co. Survey John Cate asignee of William
Cate. Curtis Kennedy told me that I could get a copy of the land
records of William assigning all of his land, however, the number
given on the survey was not for William Cate. I read the microfilm &
couldn't find it & then wrote to the VA archives to have them search
for it & they also couldn't find one for William.
Is there anyone on the List who could go to the VA Archives & search
for this survey. It might help solve our John problems. The William
on the Survey could be the William son of Robert Cate, Shoemaker,
that we only have one Orange Co. deed on.

I have a couple of questions...William CATE was in Washington Co VA with or
before but associated with John CATE. Which William CATE? If William CATE
who some thought was the son of the John CATE SR who settled in TN. But the
William CATE who was in Jefferson Co TN and moved to McMinn Co TN. why were
they together, unless they were somehow related, brothers, cousins or?
C. Kennedy gave the following explanation to Roberta Pierson (which will be
much more brief):"Now--let me explain Washington Co. Survey Bk.A:368-A
person by the name of WILLIAM CATE had been to Richmond and purchased a NEW
TREASURY WARRANT & he was there in the office of 12 Dec 1783. Somehow the
that New Treas. Warrant got to SW VA & we do not know the total amount of
the Warrant etc."
William CATE is in Richmond 12 Dec 1783? I had to give some sort of ground
work to get to the following: "Now the 1798 "sell-off" of Land from John
Cate and Mary his wife. Legal proof that the man who buys land ON New
Warrant #21,261 in Washington Co VA is now "of" Sevier Co., TN. Please note
when John bought it was his name only. When he sells-his wife Mary is cited
in the Deed--this tells me that wife Mary has 1/3 dower interest in the
Washington Co VA property. They could have been married when the land was
bought---BUT THIS DEED proves she lived on it and as a wife's blood sweat &
tears--SHE HAD LEGAL EQUITY AND JOHN COULD NOT SELL THIS PROPERTY WITHOUT
HER PERMISSION. Also note that Preston surveyed for John Cate on 13th of
Jan. 1787 and for James Ireeson on the 15th. Also note there was about six
years from the time of survey till the time the Governor sent his Greetings.
"
We know this John Cate and wife Mary "of Sevier County" were per C. Kennedy
"living" on said property. It seems to state that John and Mary Cate were
not married when John Cate purchased sd. property, knowing the date it was
sold does not present a problem. Obviously they were not living there ca
1771 the year the son of John and Mary Cate "of Sevier County" were. They
were not maried according to the explanation by C. Kennedy, Jr.! We have
other John and Mary Cate's living in both counties. This deed would fit well
with Jr. but the time frame makes him and his wife Mary Koontz much to
young. Thank you for the time and hope someone can explain the time frames,
as they just do not work. Ann
To all: I know some of you have sent me a query this past wk but I have not had time to respond nor will I be able to for at least another wk.
I suggest you pose your query to the list or to Roberta Pierson "our mother hen".

Sorry but my I lost your e-mail before I could write down the information and
look into it (I have to compete with my daughters for time on this machine).
I didnt immediately recognize your family names. If you wish to send them

maybe they will also turn up something for you!
I thought I would share what I have on Richard Cates (1780) and married
to Elizabeth Tharp (1781-)
Children:
Jane (1801-1893) married 1/15/1823 in Jefferson County, Tennessee to
John Burnett (1801-1877). Both are buried in Wayne County Indiana. I
know of only children Mary, Silas and James but there were others as a
short biography of James says he was the 5th son born of Jane and John.
Celia Cates (1802-?) married to John Turner in Jefferson County,
Tennessee. Children named in Howard County History book in article on
son Ambrose lists the following: William Henry, Richard, Ephraim, Jesse,
Ambrose, John, Perry, Radford, Rachel, James (I have been told this was
a mistake that it is Jane), Mary, Richard, Amanda and Rebecca. I have
some info on these but draw a blank on others. The last I saw of Celia
was in the 1880 Census of Jackson township, Howard County, Indiana.
Mary"Polly" (1803-1865) married 11/7/1825 in Jefferson County, Tennessee
to Isaac Lock. Children Richard, Martha and Isaac. Mary is buried in
the cemetery at Williamsburg, Wayne county, Indiana.
Samuel (still searching for info)
Baldwin (have recently received info from some of you) Does anyone know
the dates of his birth and death?
John (1808-1879) married 1/8/1832 in Jefferson County, Tennessee to
Rachel Pierce (1809-1872). Children: Sophia, Mary, Martha, Noah,
Jesse, nancy Jane, John Henry, Telitha A., Rachel Alwilda, George W.,
and Clarkson Le. John and Rachel are buried at Greentown, Howard
County, Indiana.
Ephraim (1811-1894) married in Wayne County Indiana to Martha Cranor and
then to Catherine Griffin. Children: (by Martha) William, Anderson,
Thomas Jefferson, Harrison, John and (by Catherine) Avezzana, Gavazzi,
and Margaret Elizabeth. Ephraim is buried at Williamsburg, Indiana.
Silas (1811-1889) married to Margaret Amos. Children: John, Preston,
Elvenza and Jesse. 2nd marriage to Mrs. Matilda Edwards Martin.
Children of 2nd marriage: Alice and Fremont.
Jesse (1815-1901) married to Rebecca Coggshall. children: Harvey, Mary
Catherine, Charles Orlando, Sarah J., Arthur L., Larrinda, George L.,
Lucy Ellen, and Edwin H. One of the leading money men of his time in
Wayne County, In.
Daniel (still searching for info) I know he married Sarah Cranor and
that in the 1840 Census they had 2 males and one female under the age of
5 and one male between 5-10. Howard county Indiana history books credit
him with building one of the first mills in the eastern end of the
county in 1851-52. The census listing I gave was Howard County 1840 but
I can't find him in 1850 in Howard County or Indiana state indexes.
Rachel (still searching, possibly married to Jonathan Pierce in
Jefferson County, Tennessee.)
Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" (1819-1908) marrid to John M. Harper
(1818-1904). Children: Rachel, Mary Ellen and William Andrew. They
are buried at Greentown, Howard County, In. John was a brother to
William C. Harper, husband of Elizabeth Ann's sister Priscilla.
Anderson (1823-1906) married Nancy Catherine Neal on 9/29/1844 in
Jefferson Coutny, Tennessee. Children: Clarkson, henderson, Smith, J.
Harvey, Elizabeth J., Addison, Luther W, Adeline, Lettecia, Monroe,
William and Ruth. in 1879 in Delaware County, Indiana he married a lady
named Letiticia J. last name unknown. He is buried in Niles Township
Delaware County, In.
Priscilla (1826-1867) married to William C. Harper in Tennessee.
Children Richard, James and Mary were said to be born in Hatters Corners
Tennessee a location that I haven't yet found. 4th child, John, my
great grandfather was born in 1851 in Wayne County, Indiana and the
youngest Andrew was born in 1856 in Howard County, Indiana. They
arrived in Howard County in 1856.
Hello:
I have posted this query before but it has been several months. I hope
someone new will be able to fill in a
gap or two for us.
My ancestor, SAMUEL CATE b. 1805 TN, d. <1880, he marr 1)MAHALA HORN?
(Possibly Mahala had a brother, RYLE HORN and SAMUEL had an uncle, JOHN
CATES, men of property). One decendant says this marriage took place in the
area of Knoxville, TN or in a contiguous county.
Their children included:
1. THOMAS b. 1835 TN marr. MALICIA ???, Rome, GA
2. FELIX GRUNDY b. 1838 TN
3. MARY K. b. 1840 TN marr. MULLINS
4. MAHALA CLEMENTINE b. 1842 TN marr. M.R.COBB
5. PHEBE F. b. 1843 TN marr. BEN REEVES
6. JAMES M. b. 1843 TN
7. MARION MARSHALL b. 1844 TN (in Rock Island Prison during Civil War?)
SAMUEL CATE marr. 2) MARY (POLLY) JINKINS? b.1815? NC. The family is living
in MURRAY CO., GA in 1850; CHEROKEE CO, AL in 1860; BELLEFONTE, JACKSON CO,
AL in 1870,
Their children include:
1. MIRIAM LOUCINDA b. 1848 GA marr. GEORGE CRABTREE, Jackson
Co, AL
2. WILLIAM R. b. 1853 GA
3. NORA b. 1857 AL
4. ROY M. b. 1858 AL
5. SIMON GIDEON NERO b. 1860 Hoke's Bluff, Cherokee Co, AL marr.
SARAH JANE REYNOLDS, Lived for 38 years in Rome, GA. a
blacksmith.
I hope some of the persons who subscribe to the Cate List will be able to
recognize these people.

I am not sure if Cates is Rachel's maiden name or married name. For that
period of time she married rather late for a first marriage as she was 27
and so was her husband. So there is a good possibility that she had been
married before but can't find any record of it. There is a record in the
Lost Creek Quaker records of a Rachel Pierce Cates being separated from the
church for marrying outside the faith in 1840 but my Rachel had already
been in TN and then lived in AL for many years. She died in 1843 so I
don't believe they are the same person.
Billie
Billie, your message to the List was addressed correctly.
Guilford Co. NC was not formed until 1770 from Rowan & Orange Co. so
you should probably be looking for Rachel in Orange Co.
Also is Cate her maiden name or a married name?

possibly she was married before. I am searching for her parents, siblings

Hi Paul, welcome to the Cate List.
John & Priscilla Lloyd Cate wouldn't be the parents of Richard. John
was born ca 1779 & Priscilla 1780/1784. I have a list of their
children there isn't a Richard. They were in Franklin co. TN in 1830,
John d. ca 3 Aug 1840 in Coffee Co. TN (part of Franklin became
Coffee).
1840 Priscilla was the head of the household in Coffee Co.

Baldwin Cates shows up in the 1880 census in Ray County, MO. He had a son
named Calloway b. 1840 married Martha Headrick, who also shows up in Ray
County, MO in 1880. From Church records I recently recieved it appears that
Calloway was close to his father Baldwin.
Baldwin's children were:
Calloway b. ca.1840
Amanda b. ca. 1844 (shown as Amanda Turner, widow with daughter Nora in 1880
and living with her father in Ray County)
Richard b. ca. 1848 m. Martha J. Slaughter
Robert b. ca. 1851
Matilda b. ca 1850
Malinda b. ca. 1855
Nancy b. ca. 1857
Noah b. ca. 1859
Mary J. b. 9/5/1860 TN d. 3/20/1946 Ray County, MO - Married James M. Edgar
at Mary J.'s home James b. 3/18/1866 Grayson Cty., KY d.
3/25/1941 Ray
County, MO.
Mary Jane Cates was my great grandmother.
I don't know much about Noah except from my father (who is still alive and
remembers him from his childhood). He apparently did not live in Ray County,
but moved around living with relatives. He was a woodcarver and carried a
pistol. He had an elaborately carved pistol handle which he carved himself.
My father remembers the Cates as a very religious family. He said he thought
the men were ministers. This may not have been exactly accurate based on the
facts coming from all of this correspondence but in a very remote and
primitive area they were probably as close to that as there was in the area.
I have information on the children of Calloway Cates and Mary Jane Cates if
anyone wants them.
