Ken,
I have never found a supplement or expansion to the Cate/Cates Family of New
England book. I agree that it is very limited and doesn't address the
important Cate family of Barrington, NH. What is your Cate line? Maybe we
can help.

I have a book (on loan from the HEHGS Library) called "The Cate-Cates
Family of New England" by E.E. Cates and M. Ray Sanborn (1905). In the
begining of this book they say that "Mr. Sanborn contemplates a larger
work..." Does anyone know if this "larger work" of Mr. Sanborn was ever
published? The book I have is long on names but short on facts.

Can anyone on the lists provide any additional information on THOMAS CATES
who was a J.P.(Justice of the Peace) on 30 July 1764 probably in either Amelia
or Saxegotha Townships in Berkeley Co., South Carolina, according to one deed
reference? This was in the general area of where Columbia is located today.
Is he the same man who is later referenced in Orangeburg District? Based
on the fact that Justice of the Peace was a Public Office, he was probably at
least 20-21 years old and probably older which would make his birth at least by
1740 and probably earlier.
Could he possibly be the same man who received land on Slauda River in 96
Dist., later Edgefield District, South Carolina, in early 1786 and died in
Edgefield Distict 1790-94 with widow, Martha, and children: Joseph, John,
Hulda, Kezian, and Thomas. Based on the fact that Joseph had a son, John,
whose birth year appears to be c. 1787, the birth year of Thomas who d. 1790-94
has been estimated as around 1735.
This family along with several other Cates families were already settled in
the Cloud's Creek (Ridge Spring area) now in Saluda County, South Carolina,
prior to 1790. Have a good group of deed records, but almost no references to
relationships in the group.
Any assistance appreciated. Have been stuck here for over 30 years.

Am looking for the parents and/or siblings of Isaiah Cates/Kates (b.
circa 1817 in Tennessee or North Carolina; d. circa 1858 in southwestern
Missouri) who married Nancy Shelton (b. circa 1827 in Tennesse or
Missouri;
d. circa 1895 in McKinney, Texas), daughter of William and Mary Shelton.
Isaiah and Nancy were settled in Perry County, Tennessee in 1850 but later
moved to Dent County, Missouri where they resided in 1860. They had seven
children named Margera, Sarah, George, Isaiah Jr., Joel, JOHN CONLEY (my
great grandfather) and Bette Elizabeth, all born betwen 1842 and 1859.
Have run into a stone wall trying to find the parents/siblings of Isaiah.
They possibly were in Giles County, Tennessee in 1840. Any help would be
most appreciated. Thanks...

Guess I addressed the last note incorrectly. I did want to get some
information to Nancy Cate of Bristol, NH whose address I do not have.
Solomon Cate of Barrington, NH, son of Capt. William Cate, was born 12 Nov
1727 and died in Barrington in 1799. He had the following children: Joseph
born 1757 and died in Alton, NH 1827; Eleazer born 1760 and died 1819 in
Barrington; possibly John born before 1769; probably Benjamin born 1775 and
died at Standsted, PQ in 1851; Ebenezer born born bef. 1777 and died 1816 in
Barrington and a daughter Sobriety.
Solomon Cate probably had two wives. We believe that sons Benjamin and
Joseph were brothers in spite of the difference in ages. They deeded
together and moved from Barrington to Alton where they farmed and were taxed
together. Benjamin Cate left for Quebec in 1817, leaving Joseph in Alton. It
is possible but unlikely that Benjamin was the son of Joseph but did not
share in Joseph's estate in 1827.
If anyone has information on this family, I would appreciate it and will be
happy to supply more of what I have. Bless Morton Wiggin for writing the
History of Barrington, NH, but be careful...there are many mistakes and gaps
. No where is there any evidence that I have found anywhere to suggest that
Solomon Cate of Barrington had a son Solomon. There is a "Solomon Jr"
mentioned in court records, but we do not believe that he was the son of
Solomon, rather a younger man with the same name, probably a nephew.
