A Soldiers Christmas
'Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone.
In a one bedroom house, made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give,
And to see just who in this home did live.
I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.
With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
A sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different,
It was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier,
Once I could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured, a United States soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I'd just read?
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?
I realized the families that I saw this night,
Owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.
I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
Santa don't cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more,
My life is my god, my country, my corps.
The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent and still,
And we both shivered from the cold night's chill.
I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark, night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.
Then the soldier rolled over, With a voice soft and pure,
Whispered, carry on Santa, It's Christmas day, all is secure;
One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night.

This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan; The following
is his request I think it is reasonable.....
PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as may people as
you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our US
service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities.
Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people
stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves
for us.
Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.

Regarding Jewish CATEs -- a cousin told me that our gg grandfather
Charles Claiborn Cate, b. 1840 or 1847 in McMinn Co, TN was Jewish and
that the family "hushed it up." I'd be very interested to find out if
anyone else has information about this. Thanks, Becky Smith
I am related to the Cates Family by marriage and I have been going through the
archived messages for this list and found some that may pertain to the line I
am researching. Someone was also seeking information of Cates and Babbs in
the same area. I am also researching the Babb Family (my husband's
ancestors). My aunt Gladys (by marriage) is the daughter of W.T. Cate and my
Uncle W.D. Cate (by marriage) is the grandson of W.T. Cate.
William T. and Annie Cate had the following children (I think): Maynard,
Gladys, Lucy, Ed and Elden. I am interested in any information anyone has on
W.T. and Annie Cate and the relationship of the following people.

Hi All,
I received this interesting tidbit from Mary Alley another Cate
researcher and hope some of you have some comments.
"I was looking at the current issue of Everton's (p.80) last night
and ran across something I thought was rather interesting. It was
talking about a SEITZ line from Germany--said some people changed the
spelling to SYKES in this country..."
In the bio of Joseph Marion Dixon Cates it said his Cate line was
Jewish. He was of Sykes descendant.

his daughter Mary Cate fifteen pounds.
This was in Orange County, NC.

Hello
I have a book titled Nutt/McNutt Descendants of David Nutt Of Orange
County,NC
My G.G.Grandfather was Robert McNutt Born in PA. He moved to NC where he
met and married a Mary Kate's or Kate. I have not been able to find anything
on them Before they married. I do know they moved first to Russell County<VA
then to Scott County, VA. But I was reading the book and by luck I came across
A. Robert Nutt who Married A. Mary Cates. I am believing that they may be one
in the same. The book also mentions an Anne, Benjamin, James, Jane Who also
married a Nutt, Jessie, John, Lazarus, Mary, Polly, I believe she is the same
Mary who married Robert Nutt, She also went by Polly. Rachel, Richard,
Solomon, Timothy, And the last one is William.
If anyone can use this be my guest, If you can help me it would be
appreciated.
Thanks
Mac McNutt
PS: The reason I think they are one in the same is because it was not unusual
back in those days for a person with the last name of Nutt to change it to
McNutt
I am going to be putting together a website on CATE/CATES/KATE/KATES.
Anyone who is willing to provide links or their family histories, please e-
mail privately at
cccharlie1(a)aol.com
I hope to incorporate a large amount of census, marriage, cemetery, and will
data, along with a list of all the CATE/CATES/KATE/KATES I can find.
Hopefully, it will help us to answer a bunch of questions.
Thanks!
Charlie
