Hello, anybody out there?
I have posted a query several times with no response. Most of the
e-mails on the list have been in the area(s) surrounding where I am looking,
but no one seems to be on my lines. I am looking for any information on my
grandfather:
James Herschel CATES b. Feb. 16, 1918 in Columbia or Jackson TN
Bishop H. CATES b. 1899 d. 9/24/1926
Ola Mae HIMES b.? d.?
My grandmother keeps telling me that the Cates & Himes were from "West
Tennessee". Well that's a big territory for me here in VA. Can anyone
HELP or offer any suggestions? My grandmother is now mad at me because I
found some old skeletons and she will not discuss any family information
with me! Please help!
Baffled in VA

Reply to the message from Debbie Oxford Long:
The following has little to do with your information but it many cases it
can relate to same. "THE PRIVACY OF VULNERABLE PEOPLE" In "RootsWeb Review,
Vol. I. No 16, Sept. 30, 1998, I thought everyone on these lists, webs etc
were aware of publishing names of the living, especially the elderly and our
children and grandchildren. It is my own fault that the names of my
children and grandchildren have become knowledge to anyone that wants them.
They were never given to anyone other than those whom I THOUGHT knew better.
I refuse to give further information especially if it relates to the living.
What are any of you who might use these names thinking about? You surely
hear the news, morning and evening. In no uncertain terms, leave my
children and grandchildren off of the computers, do not publish, no FGS.
Leave them alone. I have seen it already on three occasions. This is not
related to the Cate-L alone, you just happen to come through here. But is
has happened due to information on this list, and I have given some of it
myself.
Everyone is aware that FTM will not publish names of the living on their
CD's, that alone is a statement to those who simply do not know or do not
care.
Again, no blame to this particular Cate-L, although I have seen written
information on my children and grandchildren from two of the people on this
list, my fault for giving any information.

Recently, I was reviewing a micorfilm of genealogical data at the local
LDS genealogy center and ran across an undated paper entitled "Hastings
Family Record". This article was written by a William Thomas Hastings
who gives credit to cousins (mostly in TN) who helped him. It was based
on two wills recorded at HILLSBORO, ORANGE COUNTY, NC.
The first will is that of Henry Hastings b. about 1730 and d about 1812.
The second will was that of a son of Henry, James Hastings who was b
about 1762 and died in 1822. His wife was Hannah Crabtree.
Beginning with Ester (Hattie) Hastings there is a broad Cate/Cates line.
Ester b. c1760 and d c1864 m ? Cates. From this marriage were produced
Susan (c 1804-1884), James (c 1812-1892), Millie m. a Mix and Betty who
m a Vaughn. Descendants are listed.
I could not make a copy of the article as the viewer did not have a
capacity for copying documents. If this is of interest to anyone, they
can visit their local LDS library and request that film #1036293 be sent
to the library from SLC. See item 6 on the film. If you have access to
the the facilities in SLC see 929.273 A1 #2341.

Hi Folks,
It is apparent that my last 3 posts of the CATES Tidbits got lost
when RootsWeb crashed.
I have been out of state and when I returned I had a bunch of mail to read
and respond to. During the past 3-1/2 days I have gone through 987
messages and am finally getting to take a little break before the next
batch comes in, in about 7 minutes.
I will hunt up the 3 posts that got lost and resend them tonight.
Until then, Happy searching.
Have a nice day,
Don Stanton
