To All,
I'm a southern Cate follower but have run across the following in
my searches of Adams Co., IL:
History of Adams Co., IL, 1879, p. 719
Cate, Benjamin, gardener and fruit grower. P.O. Quincy, IL.
Benjamin was born in Durham, New Hampshire, June 18, 1812; came to
Quincy May 1, 1837; was married to Debora Wood Thompson in February,
1841. She was born in Livermore, Oxford County, ME. They have had 8
children:
Florida T. Cate b. Aug. 25, 1842
Emanda Cate b. March 13, 1844
Mary Jane Cate b. July 1, 1846
Roswell Cate b. April 26, 1848
Ellen Cate b. Jan. 31, 1850
Otis T. Cate b. Oct. 23, 1852
Walter Cate b. Dec. 30, 1855
Austin Cate b. May 24, 1858
Mr. Cate owns 43 acres of land worth $150 per acre. The family are
members of th Baptist Church.
Same Source, p. 446 says:
Among the early members of Free Will Baptist Church of Quincy
were Benjamin Cate. In 1848 the Society was disbanded oweing to the
removal of a number of the leading members from the City.

Looking for information on Nancy CATES who married Joseph Miller in 1876 in

I am trying to find information on Isaac Cate, born July 14, 1821 in
Derby, Vermont and died October 23, 1864. He was married to Caroline
Mae Young who was born July 7, 1826 and died November 9, 1895 and also
to a Rhoda McClaffing briefly we believe. He had 10 children named
Alfred b.1854, Charles b.1846, Albert b. 1848, Richerd b. 1850, Phebe
b.1852, Melinda b. 1856, Frank b.1858, Richard b. 1860, Isaac b. 1862
and Fred b. 1864.
We have been unable to get confirmation on the birthplace or date, but
have copies of his enlistment papers which indicate he entered the Union
Army in St. Paul on Feb. 4, 1864 and those papers indicate the dates
shown above. We also have copies of a marriage document that indicates
he married a Rhoda McClaffing in Stanstead, Quebec on May 7, 1841.
Can anyone help me with Isaac? We would love to have information on him
& also would like to find who his father might have been.
Thanks in advance.

HI: posting for a fellow CATE cousin. Can anyone help him?

1. Isaiah CATES was born abt 1832 in either Tennessee or
Missouri.
2. Joel CATES was born on 7 Oct 1854 in Springfield, Greene
Co., Missouri.
From: John Shroeder <jshroeder(a)grci.com>
This may be a Cates tie-in with the above: My GGGrandmother
was Rebecca Elizabeth(?) Cates, b. about 20 August 1806 in NC.
She probably moved with her family (parents unknown to me) to
TN prior to 1826 as she was married to my GGGrandfather,
Jeremiah Acuff, in Grainger Co. TN on 12 December 1826 by a
minister whose name, if I recall correctly, was Porter
Tarrant. Jeremiah and Rebecca had several children, William
Dixon Acuff (my GGrandfather) b. 26 December 1827 and Martha
Acuff (Wallace) b. 1830 probably in Grainger Co TN.
They moved to the Walnut Grove area of Greene Co. MO in 1830.
Jeremiah later wrote letters to the Bolivar (MO) Press telling
of their travels and early days in Greene Co. In his letters
he indicated that "we met a brother-in-law who had come out
earlier". I have always assumed this was a brother of Rebecca
rather than a husband of one of Jeremiah's sisters (but could
be wrong in that assumption.) That could well have been the
father of the Isaiah Cates above b. 1832 in Springfield, near
Walnut Grove.
**Was the TN location prior to the MO location for the above
Cates in Grainger Co??**
There were later other Acuffs who came to Greene Co. as well
and Jeremiah and Rebecca had 5 more children in Greene Co.
Jeremiah and Walter Dixon both served in the Union Army with
a troop from Greene Co.
**Were there Cates men in the same troop??**
Jeremiah, Rebeccah and their children are buried in the Walnut
Grove cemetery.
**Are there other Cates family members buried there??**
To All:
I just want you all to be aware that Aurelia Cate Dawson and
Elizabeth Cate Manly's books have errors in them. They are good for
starters but be sure to check out the info with documentation.
An example: Dawson says John Cate Sr. of Jefferson Co. TN is the son
of the John who wrote the will in Caswell Co. NC. That has been
disproved John Cate Sr. of Jefferson Co. is probably not from NC. The
John Cate son of the John of Caswell also died in Caswell Co. and is
the line of Sister Mary Francis Cates.
Elizabeth Cate Manly says William Cate of Jeff. Co. is the son of
John Cate Sr. however, we have found no proof & found that John Cate
born ca 1753 & William Cate born ca 1760 could not be father & son.
If anyone wants copies of the groupsheet on John Cate Sr. send me
your snail mail address.

I rented a copy from the NE Gen. & Historical Society.
There is a William & Elizabeth (Cotton) Cate that moved to Barrington,
N.H. about 1730 but they don't have a Joseph.

Hi, Bettye!
>> George Rufus Cates b in Collins Co TX - unk date or parents
d 1926 in Anson, Jones Co, TX
(mystery here is that some of my allied Cates line also lived there at
that time but they do not recognize this person's name) <<
I saw your message the other day regarding George Rufus CATES and thought that I
would send my reply to the list so that everyone could see what CATES family (or
families) I am researching <g>. This reply is somewhat long, but I thought that
is was necessary to include all of the families because I am almost positive
that these CATES families are related in some way to each other. They all lived
near each other in Beaver Co., OK at one time, but moved back and forth from TX
to OK. I need to look at the 1880 Soundex for TX to see if I can find these
families so that I can make the connection between them!
Here is what I have found so far:
