John Holden writes :
Hi, maybe not a dramatic, breaking down of incredibly obstinate walls,
but an example of the use and usefulness of CD books.
The Pubs Index asked the Manchester list for the location of Sugar Lane
in the 1820's. Using Kelly's 1873 Manchester Directory, I found Sugar
Lane and the street that it ran off and with that information, quickly
located Sugar Lane on the street map in Memorials of Bygone Manchester.
It was then but a peace of cake to pinpoint the road (un-named) on a
modern map.

Problem :
On the shopping cart some people are experiencing this problem :
> Error: Error deleting
../acatalog/172Z182Z253Z157A1024681279B15930C0.cart
> (No such file or directory).
This is due a problem with Norton Firewall, and how it interacts with
our shopping cart software.
Response from the developers of Actinic, the shopping cart software :
There is no fix, as such, for this at present. However, we realise it is
a serious problem and are doing our best to resolve it as soon as
possible.
The problem occurs with any firewall software where the privacy setting
blocks the referrer information. The only workaround available is to ask
customers to change this setting.
Please see
http://www.actinic.co.uk/support/norton.htm for details.
I know this is far from ideal but it is a difficult problem to solve. I
would like everyone to know that it is a top priority for us and we will
let you know as soon as a fix becomes available.
Lesley Withall
Actinic Software
The relevant section of their support web pages :
Norton Firewall Configuration Issue
Shoppers who have Norton firewall installed on their PCs in its default
configuration find that when the add to cart button is pressed, the
images are missing, and pressing 'Checkout Now' produces a 'General
Script Error' Error: Error deleting /acatalog/xxxZxxxZxxxZxxxAxxx...cart
(no such file or directory).
We are working as a matter of urgency on a permanent fix as described
below. In the meantime we recommend the following workaround.
Workaround
Since it is not possible right now to eliminate the problem from within
Actinic, we recommend displaying the following message or something
similar within the site :
"Norton Firewall users: to configure your system for shopping from this
site, please proceed as follows :
* Open Norton Firewall, select 'Privacy Control' and click on the button
'Custom Level'.
* Remove the tick from the 'Enable Browser Privacy' check box and 'OK'
the screen.
* Close the program."
Rod's comment :
I would not expect there to be a "fix" from the developers of the
Actinic shopping cart software in the near future. Therefore users of
Norton Firewall should follow the work-around instructions.
In fairness to Actinic (the shopping cart software), the real problem is
caused by Norton Firewall, and not Actinic.
This error and work-around is now posted to the "Questions and Support"
section of our own web pages.
http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/faq/index.htm
In the near future Archive CD Books will be changing to a *different*
(and much better and more user-friendly) shopping cart software. This is
at the testing and fine configuration stage.
