Subject: Rosa Kent
Hello Kerry, I am looking for Rosa Kent[ Fuller ] born Hackney c.1835 daughter of John Kent can you help.TIA Syd Pawley
Kerry, our illustrious list owner, asked me to post something to the
list. So here are a few of my thoughts at the very beginning of this list.
Until recently I owned a dozen lists, mainly concerning Norfolk genealogy,
so I know a little about them. Lists usually start slowly, so I was
surprised to find that we have over a dozen subscribers already today.
Subscribers usually fall into three groups .... first the
beginners who are too shy or lack the confidence to join in. We were all
beginners at one stage and we have all made our share of boo boo's .... and
still do. There is only one way to learn and that is by doing. Beginners
will always find lot's of very nice people on a list, who will be only too
happy, to get the new comers bump started.
The second group are those who know what they want and go after it.
They learned long ago that they are not going to find the answers .....
unless they first ask the questions. They know how to post for maximum
response by using meaningful subject lines. Also by making SURNAMES stand
out by putting them in capitals. They will always give enough information to
let others know exactly what they want. When in doubt, it is better to err
towards too much ... rather than too little. They know how important known
Surnames, given names, dates and place names are ..... and always include
them where known. In this group you find understanding , generous people
..... willing to give more than they receive. Always ready to help and
contribute.
The last group are the 'lurkers'. They subscribe to a list and
then I assume that they go to sleep, because that is the last anyone ever
hears of them. No-one ever gets to know what they wanted or how they could
be helped. For every active person on a list, there will be ten lurkers.
Lurkers are normally totally dormant ...... until some henious crime is
committed on the list ..... like a beginner hasn't found the shift key yet
....accidently types a whole email in upper case ... or makes a spelling
mistake ..... and then ..... they become total monsters .... for a very
short time. One of a list owners very few pleasures is deleting them ... as
quick as they appear !.
So how does this all work in practice. My purpose in being on
this list is to try and complete my CATCHPOLE's of SUFFOLK search. The interesting
point is that I am doing it publically on a list. I mention this because I
have been caught out so many times by people who want to exchange data .....
then they take yours that has taken years to collect .... and that is the
last that you will hear from them. It can be very frustrating. The problem
is ...... the knowledgeable people in group two .... always give out as much
information as they can .... in order to further their own cause. So
eventually we come to learn to expect people who take without trying to give
anything in return. The most annoying reply you can ever get from some-one
that you have given your all to .... is .... "Your data does not connect,
but I will hold it on file in case it may be of use to some one else".
The answer is only to give 'enough' out.
It may contains a lot of basic data ..... but not the detail. In practice sending more
detail would only confuse things.
In the case of the CATCHPOLE's of Suffolk there are only a very few people researching them ..... and so
finding a single one of them can open the gates to all.
Thank you all for bearing with me and I wish you all success in
your searches. ......... John Kent.

Kerry (List Admin)
Hi all
One of the projects I'm hoping to bring to you, with the wonderful help of my cousin Sylvia Quinn, is a CATCHPOLE birth, marriage and death database.
We are in the process of transcribing ALL the Catchpoles from the St Catharine Index's, however as I'm sure you'll appreciate this is a very big task and will take some time to complete.
Both Sylvia and I will be visiting the our respective records office about twice a month each. We will be collecting the index's and putting them into a database that will be available to you all.
Inclusive of the BMD data will be information regarding parentage , census info i.e address's and page and folio's, together with any other information we receive from other sources such as Pallots, Wills, Parish Registers, directories etc.
To help us in this task we are hoping that you may have some index's, and other info as stated above , that we can use in the database, which will be available to all CATCHPOLE researcher alike.
We believe that if we can get this database up and running it will benefit us all, save time and money in searches and bring together "families"
You may post anything that you feel may be useful in this project, to the list, Sylvia Quinn sqgorst(a)btopenworld.com
or myself Kerry Prentice kerry(a)kprentice.fsnet.co.uk
Many thanks

Rob Dewsall returned the Middlesex directories to The Barnet Archives,
along with copies of the CD's. They had had a chance to look through
some of the twenty or so other CD's we donated to them last week
and they were very impressed indeed.
They had been searching for original copies of the 1902 London
directories for years without success, now they have them on CD.
Rob Dewsall writes :
I spoke yesterday to David Knott, the head of collections at Reading
University Library. He has agreed to allow us access to both their open
shelves and their closed collections and in return we will pay for the
restoration of any books which have become sufficiently dilapidated to
require it. With regard to the closed collections this is especially
important as it means that previously unavailable books and records will
now be made available on CD to genealogists, historians and students all
over the world.
The Library will also receive copies of any of our CD's that they
require and they hope to make these available over their network, thus
aiding their own students and readers in their research.
I am *very* excited about this new project as they have some *extremely*
rare and interesting books and these will start to appear on CD in the
near future.
Full credit is due to one of our supporters, Barbara Watts, for
introducing David Knott to The Archive CD Books Project.
Paul Gaskell writes :
I'm pleased to report that Archive CD Books have kindly donated a copy
of this book on CD to this society :- The Burford Records A Study in
Minor Town Government by R H Gretton
This is an eighteenth century book, which comes in three distinct
sections :-
1. History of the corporation of Burford.
2. Studies in the history of Burford.
3. Calendar of Burford records.
There then follows a general index, index of persons and index of
places.
This CD will be freely available for users of the society's reference
library at the Holford Centre from Tuesday onwards. The Holford Centre
is now open *every* Tuesday, on the third Saturday of every month
and on one "ad hoc" Sunday per month.
For full details of dates and times, location of the Holford Centre and
the like, please see our website.
Anyone living locally who wishes to purchase a copy of the CD should
note that all of the Oxfordshire CD productions of Archive CD Books are
on sale from reception at the Oxfordshire Record Office.
