I just found out something and I thought it might help others.
My G'Uncle (living) needed a birth certificate to get his SS# many years
ago. He went to his mother with the papers to be filled out and he found
out that the name he was called-----Jimmy Jake-----was not on the birth
cert. In fact, there was no name other than his last name CATCHINGS. When
his mother sent in the papers, she gave him the name---Jacob Jake----on the
new birth certificate. He was a married man with children when this
happened. So now I may find him under either name depending on what year I
am looking at. His children will also have his "original" name not the
"new" one on their birth certificates.
I told him yesterday that his side of the family must have dropped out of
the sky since I haven't been able to find them listed in the census (1920).
That is when he told me about his name change. So it pays to watch for the
different names in a family. Now maybe I'll find him and my grandfather in
the census.
