Then that makes 3 (or 4 or 5) that were in Canada, because mine are
descended from Andrew Caswell and Mary Jane Dickson, who arrived in Canada
from Armagh, Ireland, in May of 1847 or 1848 (depends on who you talk to),
and they are not Shirley Mayse's Caswells. Some of these Caswells eventually
went to Saskatoon, SK, to be part of a temperance colony there. Some came to
the states and some stayed in Canada.

Hi Everyone -
I have just enjoyed reading the latest wave of Caswell email - It's
amazing
there are so many of us with Caswell mysteries - I have not spent a lot of
time on genealogy lately but I wanted to respond to Beulah's email because
I
have found that there are at least two Caswell family groups in Canada -
One
did come via Ireland (and Shirley Mayse has put a book together on those
Caswells) and the other (which is my line) came up through the States - I
can trace back to Robert Caswell born prior to 1719, died probably after
1800 in either Washington or Oneida Co., NY - married Hannah ( ) -
Dutchess
Co., NY Records (Fishkill Tax Lists 1740/2, Beekman Tax List 1748, Pawling
Tax Lists 1770/8) - Robert Caswell Sr. named in the Accounts of Daniel
Merritt of Quaker Hill. (This information was kindly provided to me by
Ray
Johnston, Sarasota, FL) The Caswell relatives I am related to (that I am
aware of) have all gotten to this point and then we are lost! Can't seem
to
get back another generation - whether it is another Robert Caswell
(Kerswill?) of Gosport NH? Or a Taunton MA Caswell? Or Rhode Island?
Just
hit a wall here ... My Grandfather, Harvey Caswell was a proud United
Empire
Loyalist - he would remind me he was a 5th generation UEL but ironically,
his Grandfather, James Caswell is listed on the DAR, "Patriots Index" and
DAR Papers #50730 - his service listed as Private in Third Regt., Dutchess
County Militia - Captain Wm. Pearce's Company, Col John Field's Regt. I
would speculate about his reasons for joining up (like fear of retribution
if he didn't), and there are records in the "Public Papers of George
Clinton" referring to James' brothers Reuben and John being charged with
treasonous activities. So I can only imagine that my grandfather told me
because his father would tell him and so along back the line! It's all
very
interesting.
If anyone has a clue to offer about this family, I would be thrilled to
hear
from you!
By the way, if any of you get HBO, there is a wonderful series on right
now - John Adams - which gives such a good sense of what life was like in
the early days and formation of the United States. You should tune in if
you
can.
