Hi Kim,
This is very interesting because years ago, a Caswell researcher said that he
thought our CASWELLs had some connection to Canada. I've found lots of
Indian clues in my CASWELLs and I'm wondering if some of them were connected to the
Brothertown Indians who decided to leave Rhode Island/MA for NY and then
later Canada.
Do you have any hint that the name was originally Cassell or Kessell? I'm
just guessing at the spelling because the fact has been handed down in our
family, but never written down.
There's also a Barnabas/Jotham CASWELL family from Taunton/Middleboro, but I
haven't done much research on, but they're certainly the right age to be
brothers of my Elijah, but no record of him. Of course, maybe he was born on the
wrong side of the blanket!!!!
I'd say we definitely need to keep in touch.
Thanks,
Judy
P.S. OK, you ancestors out there! Didn't anybody leave a road map? How
about bread crumbs???

<< Hi Judy. The names aren't particularly meaningful but the place is.
I've been researching Gage/Richards/Caswelll connections in what is now
southern Ontario and keep being drawn to Taunton/Middleboro MA. The
most definite lead there is Remembrance Gage, b. 1736, NY state, who had
a daughter Sarah who married a man named Richards. She may have been
the mother of my g-g-grandfather, Remembrance Gage Richards who married
a Mary Ann Caswell in Bayham Twp. Ontario, 1839. She appears to be a
member of the Caswells who migrated from NY State to Ontario in the
early 1800s. Any help with this would be appreciated.
