The following comes from the Caswell Family History on file with the St.
Thomas, Ontario Public Library. It was submitted in June '85 by a
[Mr.?] Johnson of Nokomis, Florida.
Robert Caswell of either Washington or Oneida County, NY had at least
five sons: Robert, Reuben, John, James and Nathan.
James, Nathan and Reuben's wife all died in Elgin County,Ontario.
Children of James and Nathan died in Elgin County, Ontario as well. All
this is documented.
Documented too is the involvement of these Caswells in the American
Revolution. Reuben Kiswell [sic] was arrested at Poughkeepsie [?] in
1777 as a possible traitor to the Revolution. He swore an oath of
allegiance and was released. His brother John Caswell [sic] was
arrested and convicted in 1777 after a Lieutenant Ephraim Nichols was
shot dead on his property. John was sent to the prison fleet. Their
father, Robert Caswell [sic], was fined for having a son "gone to or
joined" the enemy.
Their brother James is in the DAR Patriots Index as a Private in the
Third Regiment, Dutchess Cty. Militia.
A family split apart by war and then, seemingly, reunited.
If any of this leads to information on Remembrance Gage Richards and his
second wife, Mary Ann Caswell, m. 1839 in Elgin Cty., Ontario...I'd
be very grateful.
