No, I don't. Most of the Halls mentioned in "John Briggs of Sandwich,
Mass"
by Edna Ann Hannibal, were much later - too late to have been of any good in
tracking down her parents. However, the earliest Hall mentioned was an
Elizabeth Hall who married Barnabas Alvin Briggs. She was 30 years old in
1871. Her parents were Martin Hall and Arethusa Southworth. Now Martin
would have been too young to have been Mary Hall's parents (probably great
grandparents) but may have been in that family. It is a clue.
In my other Briggs books called "The History and Genealogy of the Briggs
Family" by L. Vernon Briggs - and it concerns also Briggs families of
Massachusetts starting with Walter Briggs who arrived in Scittuate in
Plymouth Colony and deals with most of the Briggs and related families from
the Taunton area - much more so than the "John Briggs" book. He mentions a
George Hall who was born in England and his wife, Mary. George was born
about 1600 and they were the first settlers of Taunton, New England. He had
a son named John Hall who was born in Taunton in 1640 and John's
grand-daughter, Hannah, married an Ebenezer Stetson who was somehow
connected to the Briggs family. I would have to do some reading to see how.
I wonder if that is our connection. However, our Mary Hall would have had
to have been John Hall's daughter and John, Jr.'s (who married Ebenezer
Stetson) sister judging from her age. John, Jr. was born the same year as
Mary but no way could they have been brother and sister if the birthdates
are correct - only four months difference in their ages). However, it was
the custom to name children after parents and John Hall's mother's name was
Mary. This John Hall was twice a representative to the General Court and
married Hannah Penniman.
I know this is confusing so let me put it into proper form.
1 George Hall, b. in England abt. 1600 m. Mary ?
2 John Hall, b. in Taunton, MA in 1640 m. Hannah Penniman
3 John Hall, Jr. b. 27 June, 1672 m. 1st Elizabeth King, 2nd Mary ?
Child of John Hall, Jr. and Mary ?
4 Hannah Hall m. Ebenezer Stetson.
2 MAYBE - the last on the totem pole, Mary Hall b. abt. 3 Oct. 1672
m. 1st Samuel Briggs, 2nd Benjamin Caswell and
MAYBE - Mary Hall was a daughter of another of George Hall's sons. I don't
have their names.
The William Briggs you have is still a different Briggs family that went
into Massachusetts. There were several.
If she married the Samuel Briggs that I think she may have married, he was
the son of 1 John Briggs of Sandwich, Mass. There is no mention of a second
marriage for him in the book but, it does say that "no will was recorded by
either Samuel Briggs or his wife and the dates of their deaths are unknown".
That would indicate to me that there were no records of them in Sandwich,
Mass. so perhaps they moved on elsewhere and he could have been the Samuel
Briggs that Mary Hall married. His son, Samuel, had a will that was
executed in Rochester, MA and it named his first wife, Lydia (Stetson).
I hope I haven't confused everyone completely.
