Although I have often stated that there are several ways to spell CASWELL
yet they all pretty much mean the same, there is one exception. The spelling
CASSWELL in the late 1800s is more unusual, and the people seemed to be
quite particular about carrying the extra S.
One branch of my family spelt their name this was and the came from
Trowbridge Wilts.
So, I doubt that the LDS find of a CASSWELL in Cardiff is your CASWELL
I've forwarded your email to the Rootsweb Caswell list server.

Hello Mike,
Sorry to be so long in answering your request. It's sugaring time in
Vermont and I've been very busy.
I don't have a great deal of information about George Caswell but here is
what I know and the source.
"Thomas Casswel the Son of Tho and Elenour Casswel was Bornd in the
year of our Lord feb 5 1821
George Casswel was dornd feb 25 in the year of our Lord 1823
William Casswel was Bornd Sep 26 in the year of our Lord 1825
John Caswel was Bornd March 10 in the year of our Lord 1828"
This information is written in what we consider old style probably
with a quill pen on the inside leaf of a Bible. I only have this page. The
Bible was published in 1833 so this information was copied into it and was
most likely George's own Bible. It was found inside the Jacobs family
Bible. From this information I leaped to the conclusion that Tho, William,
George, & John are all sons of Tho. & Elenour Casswel. I feel it is a
logical conclusion.
I don't know when George immigrated to America. I periodically check
the ISTG lists for an assortment of names including George Caswell. On the
LDS site I found "George Casswell Gender M Christening: 23 March 1823 at
Saint John And St. Mary, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. Since this is a month
after my information shows George being born I feel it is like my George's
baptism record. From copies of obituaries I have I know George was born in
Cardiff, Wales.
In George's wife's obituary it states that Marie Jane (Risher) Caswell
was born in Allegheny, Pa. married George in Pa., 28 April, 1853, remained
in Pa, a while then moved to Bucyrus, Ohio, to Niles, Michigan, then
Chicago, Ill., and finally to the home of her daughter Mrs. S.B. Jacobs in
Mt. Vernon, Ill. 9 children were born to this union 4 sons & 5 daughters 2
dying in infancy.
I have found a George in the 1860 Pa Armstrong Co. Kiskiminitas Twp.
I have not yet looked at this specific record but in locating Kiskiminitas
Twp on a map I find it in close proximity to Kittanning, Pa where George &
Marie Jane's daughter Alvaretta was born. Alvaretta was my great
grandmother.
I have pieced together the children of George and Marie Jane as
follows:
Mary Anne Elizabeth b. 3 Feb. 1854 d. April 1855
Martha Elenor b. 3 June, 1855 (also likely died
young)
Alvaretta b. 7 Oct. 1859 m. Sterling Bradley
Jacobs 4 Oct. 1879 in Niles, Mich. d. 20 Feb. 1929 Mt.
Vernon, Ill.
Thomas Newton b. 29 Jan. 1860 d. 1914 Chicago, Ill
David Warren b. 29 Jan. 1860 d. 1914 Chicago, Ill
(twins)
William George b. 3 June 1862 d. 6 April 1864
Eva Babinit (Blinda)b. 1 Nov. 1865 m. Newel Irving
Atkins 19 July 1884
Mary Bell b. 12 Dec. 1868
Jay b. 24 Aug. 1871.
I discovered the Eva (Blinda) Caswell information on the LDS site and
contacted the submitter. I sent him information and he has not returned the
favor except to say his grandmother's name was Blinda not Babinit.
Information about Alvaretta comes from her obituary,my Mother's
memory, my Grandmother's memory and my great aunt and uncle, my
Grandmothers' sister and brothers' memories years ago. I listened to family
stories and got them backed up on paper before the great aunt and uncle were
gone. I have some snapshots of family members also identified.
Over the years I have been contacted by 3 other Caswell families, 1
from Ct. 1 from Canada, and 1 from Mn. They do not appear to be in anyway
related. I have exchanged a short bit of information about the descendants
of twins Thomas and David from near Chicago. There are apparently a large
number of cousins I never knew there.
I grew up in Rockford, Illinois moving to Vermont in 1969. I married
in 1975 and have 2 children.
I am very interested in any information you might have.
Thanks for your patience.
