Subject: [Moonrakers] RE: Gordano, Somerset
The book that i posted earlier has 162 pages, title is
Gordano c1825
The Tale of Gordano
by Eve Wigan
Gordano, its an area / place - thats in Somerset,
in that area south of the Avon River, at its exit to the sea.
my map shows the following places, Walton in Gordano,
Weston in Gordano,
Clapton in Gordano,
Easton in Gordano,
the Avon River was called Hung Road in those days.
the book is abt those who lived there, and what they were up to c1825
gives names, birth and death dates etc
The William de Karswell, was one of a group of men who were to serve
jury duty, they were late,
"did not come on the first day. Therefore all are in mercy"
It doesnt say what fine the laggard jurors paid.
except that on arrival they were given a formidable list of questions,
to make a mistake was a crime, they had maybe a week to come up with
some answers.
"... and no doubt even poor William de Kareswell(Caswell?) had a long
memory."
a little further down ...in a listing where these jurors came from
" William de Karswell is almost certainly from Caswell Hill at Portbury"
(Portbury is south-east of Woodhill) all down river from Bristol.
------
also in the book, further along, it mentions 2 Wiltshire people
they are Emmanuel Hollyman & Reuben Hollyman
they belong to the Society of Singers. (it lists the others)
"The two musical Hollymans (basses) were tenants of Clapton Court at
the time. The two Wiltshireman seem to come a long way to sing.
They were singing Ken Hymns."
