Subject: Re: The Irish/Blackwater/Canadian Caswell Book
The earliest Caswells I know of are the original immigrants, my g g
grandfather Andrew Caswell b 1801, Fort Hill, County Armagh, Ireland and g
g grandmother, Mary Jane Dickson b 1813 Fort Hill, Altamackin, Castle
Blaney, County Armagh, Ireland (now called Forkhill). She was the dau. of
James Thomas Dickson who immigrated with his dau. and son-in-law. Andrew
is
known to have joined the Presbyterian church at Clarkebridge in 1825
at the
same time a Joseph Caswell, probably a brother, did. He and Mary Jane had
10
sons and 3 daughters (one place in my notes says 14 children), and my
g
grandfather, John J Caswell, their 7th child, was born aboard ship in the
gulf of St. Lawrence May 1, 1847 or 1848. They lived in and about
Palmerston, Ont., Canada. Later some immigrated to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,
(particularly Clark's Crossing) Canada, including my g grandparents and
their newborn son, my grandfather Albert E. Caswell b 5/24/1884 a year
later. There was a reunion celebrating this immigration westward in 1983.
Later still many came to the U.S., particularly California. Many people
have researched this whole family, but I think no one has been able to find
much about them in Ireland. There is another book PIONEER GIRL by Maryanne
Caswell Hillyard about these Caswells in Canada. She was my grandfather's
first cousin.
