Hello to Mike, from a fine summers day in New Zealand.
Did you happen to read the item by W J James, 30th Nov 1949, in an Alton
news paper.
This was about the Cresswell's - Lords of The Manor for 200 years. He
askes, Who were the Cresswells and says
According to the V C H of Berkshire ( Victorian County History) they first
appeared as Lords of The Manor of Carswell, which was situated in Bray, in
the late 14th century. The following important information is given.
John de St Philbert, died in 1458, seised of the Manor of Carswell, the
Manor having been previously settled on his Widow, did not pass to his son
William, but ultimately to the Fettiplaces. William de Carswell purchased
The Manor of Heckfield.
The History of the Manor of Heckfield confirm that William de Carswell &
William Cresswell are the same man.
William Cresswell -- The first Lord of The Manor of Heckfield died, 6th Nov,
1475 etc etc. The End.
Can you please inform me as to who this William's father was and have you
any siblings or information on this family ??
Something else i came across that you might like to read
From an item on the Utting family, under the history of Northumberland.
The first Cresswell was Utting de Cresswell (possiably Robert) from
Ellington in the mid 1100's
Robert is found in the Rolls & Records of the Court held before the Kings
Justices, in the first year of the reign of King John, 8th Nov 1199. He had
sons, Robert, Richard and down to Simon & then Roger, being recorded in the
"Escheat" of 21, Edward the 1st in 1293. One Robert, married Elizabeth
Lumley etc etc.
The Cresswell family, not holding their lands in Capite ( direct grant from
the Crown) and the property falling to the State for want of an Heir - Th
the Earl of Westmoreland, in the time of Queen Elizabeth the 1st.
The history of their descent from father to son is rendered difficult &
inticate to illustrare. The above extracts are from thje Historical works in
the Public Library, Sydney.
Question -- Have you been able to work out who belongs to whch family ??
I await your comments
Cheers - Ray & Leslie
