Hi All,
The topic of "family naming patterns" came up on one of the R.I. mailing
lists and since it involves my CASWELL and White ancestors, I thought I'd
post my question here to see if anybody found these names in THEIR Caswell
research.
I've found an interesting selection of names in my great-grandparents'
family. A casual glance at the family's list of children might suggest to
the reader that there were two wives involved, but according to research, all
seven children had the same parents (unless of course, Herbert married TWO
separate Mary Whites--which would REALLY be annoying).
The children are:
Children of Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White
1) Elwin (later known as Irving) Elsworth Caswell
2) Adriana Gertrude Caswell
3) Elnora (or Elmora/Eldora) E. Caswell
4) Laura A. Caswell
5) William. A.Caswell
6) Frederick H. Caswell
7) Allan L. Caswell
After the first three children, I see a definite change in names. Elwin,
Adriana, and Elnora seem to be more unique names than Laura, William,
Frederick, and Allan which, while perfectly fine names, just seem more
common. Or am I wrong? I could understand the first three, if they WERE
named after a family member, but the only name I can account for is "William"
who was the father of Herbert. It's almost as if whoever chose the names for
the first three children, did not have a hand in naming the rest.
Has anyone else encountered a swift CHANGE of naming patterns in one family?
OR do these names figure in YOUR Caswells too?
Judy
