There were several Samuel Briggs' mentioned in the book "John Briggs of
Sandwich, Mass." by Edna Anne Hannibal. However I found no Mary Hall but I
did find several other Halls.
1 John Briggs
2 Samuel Briggs m. abt. 1664 Bennet Ellis. Wasn't one of the Caswell's
of Mayflower descent? According to the book, Bennet Ellis was also. No
will was found for Samuel or his wife and the dates of death are unknown.
Could he have married a second time to a much younger woman? He was found
in a lot of Rochester land sale records. Could this be the connection? He
was second in line in my ancestors and Peleg was 6. Not a close
relationship but if they all stayed in the same area, the families could
have maintained relationships. His last child with Benet was born abt.
1677-78. I estimate that this Samuel was born about 1640 - 44 so he would
have been maybe 28 - 30 years older than Mary Hall. Possibly this is why
Mary Hall had a second husband.
3 Samuel Briggs b. 12 Dec. 1673 in Sandwich, Mass. d. in Rochester 14
Apr 1708 m. Lydia Stetson but she outlived him.
4 Samuel Briggs b. 27 Dec. 1713 but surely he was too young for
Mary Hall.
If you remember, there was also a Samuel Briggs - and it seemed every family
in this family had one - that was Captain of a company in the Rev. War that
one of the Elijah Caswell's served in. Could that have been this one? His
third wife was listed but not the first two and not too much was known about
his whereabouts. Maybe he was off serving in the war.
In the book were also the following references to Caswells:
* Isaac Briggs of Plymouth, grantor w. Loies signed, to Elijah Caswell, Jr.
of Rochester, grantee, tract of meadow in Rochester, wit. Thomas Caswell
and Rhoda Taber, 6 Feb. 1800 (Rec. 1804, ibid., 98: 121)
Well, I'll be. After all of this, I think I just solved this mystery or
maybe just deepened it some. I never looked this up before - just did so to
help out but that's what I get for not reading all the references to the
Caswells before.
Dr. Harvey Briggs, b. in January 1795 in Wareham m. Pamelia, dau. of Elisha
Caswell and Mary or "Polly" Hammond. (called dau. of Elijah Caswell and
Mary Harmon in another reference.). Peleg Briggs' mother was Roseanna
Hammond and his father, Joseph married her sister, Mary Hammond prior to his
marriage to Roseanna. The parents of Roseanna and Mary were Nathan Hammond
and Rose Barlow. These Mary Hammonds were probably not the same because of
the difference in years but were they of the same family? And, was this
Elijah Caswell or Elisha Caswell? I am sure they are probably one and the
same. Is this Elijah, Jr that is mentioned above? Does anyone know of any
other Caswell/Hammond connections?
My husband is wanting to leave so I must also. However, tonight or
tomorrow, I will give you the other references to Caswells in the book in
hopes that some mysteries are uncovered.
