straight to the point - no dribble. Elijah Caswell my ancestor b.
1751/52
d. 1821
at Dartmouth,
his pension papers i discovered says that he enlisted at
Northampton,Mass. ae 23/24
ho ho ! as he was married about 6 months later at Middleboro to Mercy
Seekins of Raynham dau of Robert Seekins.
Apparently some of the children of Seth Caswell m. Mary King namely his
two daughters m. to a Sampson and a Leonard are found about 1768/70 at
Shutesbury which is in Hampden Co. - George Freeman Sanborn the
essayist on the Caswells
for the Mayflower Quarterly only gives this lot at this area. All of his
findings the Caswell clan is sticking pretty much to Tauntonish towns.
Later at Northampton a Hannah Caswell m. Christopher Slack - they have
amongst others a son named Lawson - so strangely enough does my Elijah
!.
Doesn't seem like a first name - seems like a last name. The
Slack?Caswell union also produces a Johnathan Caswell Slack. that seems
to imply a given name. Seth has a son named Johnathan and a twin son
named David b. abt 1740.
Too young for my Elijah - and Elijah is not listed as one of Seths sons.
but that may be an oversight. but two sons are listed right near the
years so it would be sketchy at best.
The mystery seems to lie at Northampton somwhere - or Shutesbury *never
heard of it really. It seems that Elijah didnt have much trouble
assimilating himself back into Middleboro. hard to tell. in the Rev War
he was a drummer.
There was an older Johnanthan Caswell son of John Caswell b. 1730 who
fought in the French and Indian - he was a drummer - but is not known to
have married or have children and he dissapears from the scene - he
wrote letters to his father while in Schenectady during the 1750;s -
they were published in the NEHGS 1850 book - i dont know what they say.
another wanferlust Caswell and there were damn few of those. Oh Oh
any Lawsons marrying Caswells or Caswell that had connections to
Taunton area migrating to Hampden Co. i would like to know. a footnote
here Seth Caswells brother Samuel he m. a women whose mother was a
Seekins but all those families married into each other so that doesnt
mean a hoot !
