Hi, All,
I have information from The York Weekly (York, Maine), that was sent by
my father (E. Glen Caswell) who lives there in York, about a great new book
that is out about the Isles of Shoals entitled:
"Gosport Remembered, The Last Village at the Isles of Shoals"
Peter E. Randall and Maryeelen Burke, Editors
Photographs from the Gregory Laing Collection
A Publication of The Portsmouth Marine Society
Peter E. Randall, Publisher
Box 147, Portsmouth, NH 03802
138 pages, illustrated, $35.00, Hardcover
The book includes many first seen photos of the 19th century village along
with "valuable notations concerning the names of the owners of each
dwelling, barn and fish house", as the York Weekly states. Also it "is
further enhanced by the inclusion of records of newspaper stories and
quotes from the writings of 19th-century visitors to the area" including
Nathaniel Hawthorne and Celia Thaxter to name a couple.
There is mention of a Joe Caswell, "a drunken fisherman and town clerk", a
Caswell House photo and a house belonging to Lemuel Caswell. The photos
are from a rare collection (Laing) and are displayed at the Portsmouth
Athenaeum Gallery from now until September 5th if you live close by that
area. My parents found this display fascinating and the author asked my
father for HIS autograph!
We're not sure if Joe and Lemuel were direct descendants of ours, but our
family did live out there for many years. I can't wait to see this book.
I hope it may be of some interest (Mark???) to others out there in
Kazzie-Land.
Cheers,
-Kathy
