I am searching for information on the origins of one Samuel CASWELL (my
gggfather), born about 1769, who was living at Belchertown MA when he
married first in 1793 one Ruth Frick. Children were (1) Abagail CASWELL b.
4-21-1796 (2) Eliza CASWELL b. 6-20-1801, married first married to Daniel
Ashley, then to David A. Cadwell. (3) Worthy CASWELL - b 6-21-1798. Wife
Ruth died Sept 26, 1806 age 31 at Springfield MA.
Samuel CASWELL then married Martha (Patty) Pease, b abt. 1788, and lived in
Springfield MA. At least two children: (1) Martha Pease CASWELL b. 3-20-1811
who married William Simeon Huntoon and lived at Providence RI until her death
in 1894 and (2) an infant child who died 7-22-1816. Patty died in
Springfield on 3-1-1821 at age of 43. Samuel died March 1823 a.e. 54.
Belchertown and the Caswell family had some interrelationship before Samuel
was there. Two books on the history of the town say that in 1727 one John
CASWELL bought a 1/6th interest in the area from the State of
Connecticut--which had the rights to it acquired in a land swap between
Massachusetts and Connecticut. He was one of 6 Boston residents in this. It
was plotted by Timothy Dwight, one of the town founders. I can find no
mention at all of John Caswell in the Belchertown family records I reviewed
(after 1765), but much of it was faded. There is no mention that this John
CASWELL ever went to Belchertown.
Anyone have information or suggestions?
