Subject: Know of anyone researching Caswells in Blair County PA or Central
PA
Dear Mike,
My sister and I have been researching our Caswell line in Blair County PA
for a number of years now. It has been the most challenging line we have
ever tackled despite the fact that only a few Caswells live in this county.
We are trying to connect with other Blair County (Altoona PA is in this
county) or Central PA Caswell researchers to compare notes. We are
especially trying to find out the name of the father of our grandmother
Edith Caswell Wilt who was born in 1897. Our older relatives say that only
my father knew the name of my grandmother's father but he died before we
ever thought to ask him. We have been told Grandma's mother Sallie Caswell
was not married to grandma's father and Grandma was very embarrassed about
that. However on Grandma's marriage license it lists Grandma's father as a
William Caswell born in Altoona PA but deceased in 1919. It also lists
Grandma's mother as Sallie Caswell and Sallie's maiden name as Caswell. So
either Sallie's maiden name was Caswell and she married this William
Caswell, or her maiden name was Caswell and my Grandmother's father was
William Caswell but they didn't get married. No matter what, we cannot find
this William Caswell despite the fact that there were not many Caswells in
the Altoona area. The marriage license also lists my Grandmother's
birthplace as Saxton PA, in a nearby county in Central PA and that Sallie
and Edith were both house servants. We did find one elderly relative, the
daughter of Edith's half-sister Dorothy who said that she had been told by
family members that Edith's father was a William Caswell from Ireland.
So we thought that perhaps if we could connect with other people researching
Caswells in Blair County, Altoona, or Central PA that perhaps we could find
someone with helpful info for us or someone with a family story that would
help. My great grandmother Sallie Caswell had three children: Edith,
William, and Dorothy. The family story about her is that she had three
children to three different men but never married. Sallie's son William
Caswell moved to West Virginia and had a family there but we can't find info
on him either.
Thank you.
