I've been looking for my Caswell side (MA and R.I.). Thanks to many people,
both offlist and on, especially one who has been pouring over the Attleboro,
Taunton and Middleborough records, here's what I know so far. Thanks!!
Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White are my gg-grandparents.
Herbert A. Caswell, son of William H. Caswell and Sarah M. Macomber, was born
in 1862, in Taunton, MA. He married Mary E. White, (b. 1863/4, in Johnston,
R.I.) daughter of Samuel White--a Civil War veteran and Julia Hicks. Mary
was said to be part Native American, but so far, I have not found proof. Not
known if it was supposed to be Samuel's side or Julia's.
Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White were married in Attleboro Feb. 23, 1882.
They were married in M. C. Church in Attleboro. ((Does anyone know what
church M.C. Church is?))
Children of Herbert A. Caswell and Mary E. White
1) Irving (born Elwin) Elsworth Caswell, b.12 September 1883 MA
2) Adriana Gertrude Caswell b. 8 September 1885 MA
(may have died in childhood, not listed on later census)
3) Elmora/Eldora E. Caswell, b. May 1886, MA
4) Laura A. Caswell b. February 1888, MA
5) Wm. A.Caswell b. 20 February 1890,
(died from mumps in Norton, MA 12 July 1890 at 4 mos. 22 days)
6) Frederick H. Caswell, b. April 1891, MA
7) Allan L. Caswell, b. July 1892, MA
Mary may have died in 1894. On December 25, 1899 Herbert married an Amelia
E. b.9/1876, MA. The "Florence" listed as one of Herbert's daughters may be
hers.
Here is Herbert's obituary from the Attleboro Sun, 1915:
Herbert A. Caswell, assistant supervisor of streets, a well known and
respected resident of this city, died Wednesday night in the Strudy Memorial
Hospital after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Caswell was 53 years of age
and had lived in Attleboro for the past 45 years. He was born in East
Taunton.
Besides a wife, Mr. Caswell is survived by two brothers, William and Edward
Caswell, both of this city: two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Reynolds of this city
and Mrs. Elmora Simmonds of Taunton: three sons, Fred, Alan, and Irving, and,
three daughters, Elmora, Laura and Florence. The funeral services will be
held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the late residence, 25A Bank St.
and burial will be in Woodlawn.
If ANYONE is related to the following people, or these names have come up in
your research, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks!!! Judy
Hi Mike:
Apparently I have the ability to create GEDCOM files, although I've never
actually done it. I will experiment with creating a few files to see how it is
done. If I don't like the results, I'll delete them. I'm using PAF3 at the
moment although I'm considering modernizing my software.
I'm not keen to go through all my stuff to mask out all living bodies. I'm
also not sure how old a person should be before one can assume he/she is dead
in cases where the record is incomplete.
I'm curious why you would want my GEDCOMs when the whole file of 5100 names
contains just one Caswell, - especially when I have found no evidence that my
single Caswell connects with anyone else on the internet. Can you give me a
good rationale for distributing my data before I satisfy myself that it is
reasonably accurate and reasonably complete? I'm prepared to be convinced that
this is a good idea, but I am not convinced at this moment.
Can you give me any advice?

The Wesleyan Methodist Church merged with the Pilgrim Holiness Church and
they changed their name to just The Wesleyan Church. You can reach their
international site at http://www. wesleyan.org then click on "international

also. Good Luck.

Hi Dick:
Our line of Caswells came from Tipperary, Limerick & Clare, or maybe in the
area where these counties come together. I haven't time now to send you the
info, but next week - after Easter - I will get back to you. We have been
searching for C of I records in that area.
We have not connected with Shirley Maises line, nor to Roncon's line (which
we refer to as the Saskatoon Caswells)

Hi List:
Although I've been plugging away at this family history business for 20
years or more, I'm a relative neophite when it comes to pursuing it via
the internet. I have engaged professional genealogists in Ireland and
have been frustrated by the inconclusive results of their searches. I
understand the fragmentary nature of Irish records, but I live in hope
that somewhere someone knows something about my ancestors that I haven't
yet discovered. I have submitted a couple of online queries previously,
but this is my first attempt at an organized/rational inquiry. I hope
that this doesn't produce such a large file as to cause it to be
rejected or ignored by those who prefer their information in shorter
bursts.
Here is what I believe I know about my McCutcheon and related family
ancestors:
1. Robert McCutchin, b. abt. 1775 (my GGG-Grandfather)
parents unknown, location unknown - probably West Tipperary.
married about 1801 to
Mary Flewelline (Fluallen?), dates and geographical origins unknown.
2. They had at least 8 children:
. Robert F. (for Flewelline, perhaps?), b. Aug 1806, c. 29 Oct
1806
(Baptism Index indicates parents "formerly of Killalane")
. Maria, c. 20 Feb 1808, of Killalane, Co. Tipp.
. Elizabeth, b. 11 Jan 1810, c. 21 Feb 1810, of Killalane, Co.
Tipp.
. Thomas, c. 4 Jul 1811, of Killalane, Co. Tipp.
. Margery, c. 12 Dec 1812, of Killalane, Co. Tipp
. James, c. 26 Aug 1814, of Killalane, Co. Tipp.
. Frances, c. 20 Jan 1817, of Killalane, Co. Tipp.
. William, dates unknown, placement within family unknown.
The first seven listed were found in the index of Baptism
records
for Killaloe Parish, presumably C of I. Robert is reported to
have
discovered Jesus when the former was 14 years old. He always
claimed
afterwards that he was a Wesleyan Methodist.
Of these 8 children, 2 are known to have emigrated to Canada
(Robert
and James) and the rest are assumed to have remained in Ireland.
I have
no evidence of any correspondence between the Canadian and Irish
families.)
3. Robert F. McCutchin (my GG-Grandfather)
married 20 Nov 1827 (believed to have eloped) to
Mary Caswell, b. 1804, parents unknown, geographical origins
unknown,
but not necessarily Tipperary, possibly Co. Clare or Limerick.
4. Robert and Mary had 9 children, the first 7 being born in Ireland.
. Catherine, b. 27 Oct 1828, in Ireland
. John, b. 22 Mar 1830, in Ireland (my G-Grandfather)
. Mary Ann, 27 Nov 1831, in Ireland
. Elizabeth (Eliza), b. 25 Apr 1834, in Ireland
. Anne, b. 14 Mar 1837, in Ireland
. Robert, b. 18 Jan 1839, in Ireland
. William, b. 1 Jan 1842, in Ireland
. Sarah Jane, b. 28 Jun 1844, in Ontario, Canada
. Henry Caswell, b. 18 Sep 1849, in Ontario, Canada
The family emigrated to W. Nissouri Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario,
Canada in 1843 and later to Lambton and Kent Counties. We don't know
the dates or ports of departure and arrival, nor the ship on which
they
took passage.
5. James McCutchin
married 1835 (exact date, location unknown) to
Mary Ann Baxter, b. 1819, Co. Tipp. (parents & location unknown)
6. James and Mary Ann had at least 8 children, of whom, we believe, the
first
5 were born in Ireland
. George, b. 1836, in Ireland
. Robert, b. Mar 1838, in Ireland
. James, b. 1839, in Ireland
. Joseph, 1839, in Ireland
. William, b. 1847, in Ireland, we believe
. Marcella Jane, b. 1850, Ontario, Canada
. Elizabeth (Eliza), b.d. and location unknown, in Ontario,
Canada
. Mary Ann, b.d. and location unknown, in Ontario, Canada.
The family emigrated to Canada somewhere between 1847 and 1850. They
are recorded in the 1851 Census as occupying the same residence as
Robert
and his family. However, some later moved to nearby townships and
others
to Lambton County and the United States to work in the fledgling
petroleum
industry.
Sorry to have gone on so long. If anyone can connect with any of this or
if
anyone knows of potential sources of further information, please advise.
Thanks,
Dick McCutcheon
Most of the Caswells on this list seem to have come from England to the U.S.
Mine came from Armagh, Ireland in either 1847 or 1848 to Ontario, Canada. In
the 1880s many of them went to Clark's Crossing, near Saskatoon, to be part
of a Temperance Colony, including my great grandparents, John J. Caswell and
Patience Ethel Smith Caswell and my grandfather, Albert Edward Caswell, in
1884 when he was 3 weeks old. And many of the Caswells went to California,
including mine later on.
Your names don't ring any bells with me, but I can send you an outline of my
Caswells.
Mike Caswell has Shirley Mayse's book Blackwater Irish, which might be
helpful to you.

Hello list,
I tried sending the Leominster Caswall wills to the list several days ago,
but apparently it was too large (in any case, it hasn't come through yet).
So, I will try sending the wills separately. There are thirteen wills,
the earliest from 1596 and the last from 1668. I have preserved as much
as possible the spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc. of the
original wills. Let me know if any of you would like a Word document of
the wills (in which I have highlighted the names and relationships for
easier browsing).
