I am posting this query for a friend who has found a Caswell in his
History. If anyone recognizes these people your reply would be welcome.
John Wellwood - came circa 1812 as a child (10-12) to eastern Ontario
near south of Ottawa from County Carlow, Ireland.
He Married Jane Caswell who came early 1800's as an infant from west
coast of Ireland (north of Limerick) and
was of a "Palatine Irish" community (refugees from Paltine area
contested by French and Germans,
generations earlier).
They had 10 children one of whom was Samuel Wellwood who married
Margaret Bell
One of their children was John Wellwood who married Donna Curtis
One of their children was Gail Wellwood who married John Bailey
One of their children was James A Bailey, the man who I know.
Thanks,
Kathy
Hi, I am new to this list but not at all new to lists. I am just getting to
my Caswell branch.
I am interested in Elijah Caswell who was a father to Lucy Caswell. He
married, I think, Mary Chubbuck April 27, 1766 in Wareham, Plymouth,
Massachusetts.
Lucy Caswell, according to "John Briggs of Sandwich, Mass. and his
Descendants" by Edna Anne Hannibal, copyright 1962, states that Lucy Caswell
was born in Rochester, Mass. on 2 May 1786 m. Peleg Briggs on 14 November
1805. He was born in Wareham, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of
Elijah Caswell and Mary ? (Chubbuck?). She married (2nd) Benjamin Scofield
in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio after Peleg Briggs drowned in Lake Champlain. Peleg
Briggs and Lucy Caswell are my ancestors.
I found in Ancestry seven references to different Elijah Caswells who served
in the Revolutionary War and are listed in the "Massachusetts Soldiers and
Sailors in the War of the Revolution" but two really piqued my interest
when I saw that they served out of Rochester and one served in Capt. Samuel
Briggs' company. Capt. Samuel Briggs was of the same family as Peleg Briggs
but not a close relative. There was also an Elijah Caswell, Jr. who served
out of Rochester.
In the census records
1790, I found only Elijah and Elijah Caswell, Jr. living very close together
in Rochester as they were on the same page in the census records
1810 - two Elijahs listed on the same page in Rochester
1830 - there was only one Elijah in Rochester that I found.
The only other information pertinent to this was a reference to Elijah
Caswell buried in the Quaker Cem, Rochester, MA in "Abstract of Graves of
Revolutionary Patriots, Vol. 1"
In Ancestry, I also found a list of Elijah's children and Lucy was not
listed. I guess my question is, does anyone know if Elijah, Jr. had a
daughter named Lucy or Lucinda? Any information about him or Elijah, Sr.
will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Betty E. More
