Hi Cheryl,
I, too, am researching the NC CASWELL line. Mae and I and three others are
currently passing information to each other as we find it. I currently have
about 3500 names of direct line descendants of Richard Slaney Caswell,
Richard Caswell, Richard Caswell Sr., Richard Caswell Jr., the first NC
Governor and so on. I am his 5th great granddaughter, through his son Dallam
Caswell.
I have a John (Jack) Caswell b. 1/24/1772 d. 4/14/1795 married Mary Gray
Sheppard 1793 and one child listed, Benjamin John Caswell, but no other
information. Is this the same person you are descended from? I would love
more information, and would share anything I have.

I have, at last, loaded MY version of the Taunton, Northampton, North
Carolina Caswell line to the 'live & interactive' program, Geneweb.
All you need is a password to get in, and you can add/alter data on the
file.
Please email me for a personal password.
This, is cutting edge technology!
If anyone has a more updated gedcom file, please let me have it for
inclusion and I'll replace this one.

Hi Cheryl....YES, I would be delighted to get the book...let me know the
cost, postage, etc, and I will be glad to send it to you....my address is:
107 D Westcliff Center, Warner Robins GA 31093. Talk to you later...Mae.
Hi Mae
This is Cheryl Lynn Caswell and Mike was kind enough to send me the Book
that this email is about. Are you still interested in receiving it? If so,
I'd be more than willing to send your way now that I am done with it.
It seems that my branch of Caswell's weren't included in with this material
when it should have. My branch stems from John R. (Jack) Caswell who's son
James Madison Caswell and so on. Several of James children are listed but,
not all. My grandfather (Charles Wesley Caswell Sr) was one of those that
weren't mentioned nor his descendants. But then, how would we be included
if no one knew of our existence?

I am beginning to think no one on the list is researching the Kerswells. My
Elizabeth
married Frederick Baker, also of Lancaster, PA. I have no dates or parents
for either one.
Can anyone help? My gr-gr-grandmother, Frances "Fanny" Baker, was born
25 Dec 1831 in Lancaster, PA
Thanks for any help.

A few days ago I spoke with Noreen Haler of the CSO
I suggested to her that she let me have a copy of her 2500 page data on the
Caswell name for our latest CD.
Some of you will recall that CSO were prepared to let me have a copy of
this, at a price which I simply could not afford to pay. However, since I
have obtained all the data from the IGI etc. and have actually produced one
CD for Moonrakers, things have changed.
I have previously mentioned that I was hoping to produce this Caswell CD for
around $15.
BUT, if the CSO were to give me their entire database (2500 pages of
research) I could add this to the CD and cover the cost by adding only $10
to the CD.
Folks, this is a bargain! Noreen Haler and her sister have placed this
mammoth work of theirs in several libraries around the world. To have it on
this CD would be a great achievement!
I would like you ALL, to please write a quick note to Noreen mentioning that
you would be prepared to purchase this CD. I think that if enough people
write in, we may be able to persuade them to contribute the data to this
project. Alternatively, you can only get their work from the LDS on fiche
etc. (Wot a pain!)
I am going to contribute $10 to the CSO for every CD we sell, which should,
at least, help contribute to the enormous effort in time and money put in by
these two sisters.
Noreen's address is:-

Please write to her now!!!!

The Kerswells, historically, come from Devonshire. This is where that
particular spelling seems to be prominent, according to the IGI downloads.
Also, there is a cute village called Kings Kerswell. Bin ther - dun that! I
actually learn't to dowse for water and underground objects thanks to an old
lady name Veale in this village! I still have her book and dowsing rods!

With regard to this posting, I have uploaded my latest version of how the
Taunton Ma line and the North Carolina line originate from NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
England.
Please visit www.moonrakers.com/caswell/TauntonMA&NC.htm
This is a LARGE decendancy chart, which should answer many peoples
questions!
I hope to place a more updated version of this on the webpage, so you can
all edit the files.
I think the main problem with this Taunton, North Carolina thing has been
that the only people, up to now, who have been interested in this were
Americans. They were at a distinct disadvantage not knowing the English
terrain! Onward!
(Isn't this fun!) :-)

Anyway, anyone who thinks the Thomas Caswell line of northeast Pennsylvania,
early 1800s in UK to US, let me know. I can't get this clan across the pond!

I've been watching and reading the list messages and I'd like to toss my
names in the ring.
I have a whole line-up seemingly unconnected to any other line, but this is
I think the first time the Tauntons via Connecticut have sounded logical.
I have the following list, MOST confirmed by records and family gravesites:
1. The Caswell father would have been born abt 1800 in England (place known
by record). There were two sons listed in the census, etc.:
2. Thomas Caswell, b. 1829 in England; d. aft. 1892 in Pennsylvania
m. #1. Anna Mason, b. 1833 England; d. aft 1893 in PA
(They were not living together by the next census; he had some of
the children, the rest were at another address with her. Divorce, I believe
because he remarried, as you will see.)
had:
3. Elizabeth, b. 1855 in England (Wales?)
3. Mary A., b. 1857 in England (Wales?)
3. Ellen, b. 1859 in England (Wales?)
3. Arthur, b. Aug. 15, 1861 in England; d. Apr. 20, 1935 Plymouth,
PA
1900 PA Census; Naturalized citizen; Cary St., Plains Twp., Luzerne
Co.
m. Rachel M., b. Oct. 1866 in Wales; d. 1942, Plymouth, PA
had: 4. Mabel G. and Blanch M.
Emigrated btwn 1863-1865.
3. William, b. 1865 in PA
3. Adeline, b. Apr. 18, 1866 in Hawley, Wayne Co., PA, d. Oct. 3,
1918
3. George, b. 1969 in PA
m.#2. Mary E. ? b. 1854 in PA
had: Samuel L. Caswell, b. 1878 in PA
Davie John Caswell, b. Feb 1880 in PA
Listed in the 1870 Hazle Twp., Luzerne Co.
1880 Census #38 Harleigh, Hazle, Luzerne
William H. Caswell, age 16, George - age 13 living with Thomas and Mary E.
2. Henry Caswell, b. 1835 in England (Wales?); no wife mentioned.
3. Anna E., b. 1858 "" ""
3. George T., b. 1860 in "" ""
My direct line runs from Thomas and Anna through Adeline. I know about
Arthur because Mabel was the school nurse at my parents' schools. Many are
also buried in Forty Fort Cemetery, although I think Adeline and her first
husband John were washed out into the Schuylkill River during the 1980 (?)
floods.
I have a program called GENEWEB which allows me to place a gedcom file on
the webpage and gives password holders access to the database, so that they
can add, alter and delete files.
Seeing as there are so many people who are doing this TAUNTON line, I
thought it might be the ideal time to set this up.
Firstly, I need the latest, most comprehensive edition of a Taunton Caswell
database, so if someone could supply that! (I have not been personally
persuing this line)
Secondly, anyone who is interested, should contact me for a password. (I
can't leave this file open to the whole world, 'cos the dweebs out there
would spoil our fun!)
Thirdly, - lets do it!

Bejamin Franklin Caswell that is the anscestor of my husband and also Steve
Caswell and Janie Caswell Wideman is from this line. His grandfather and
great grandfather were Samuel. One of the Samuel's had a wife named Mary.
Benjamin's father was named Thomas . We've had a hard time finding out much
past that as Benjamin's mother died when he was young and his father
remarried. Bejamin was put on a ship at the age of 12 after his step-mother
threw a log at him. His father put him on a ship . It's a long story but a
good one. Steve Caswell has more of our information thus far. He has word
documents etc about this story. I see these Samuel's listed just like our
story . Our Benjamin was born to Thomas Caswell the son of Samuel Caswell
who was also the son of Samuel.
Our Benjamin was born in Fall River, MA ..Bristol County which later Tauton
became the county seat. I hope that I am making sense here. We have it
listed as a Samuel, then another Samuel, then a Thomas then Benjamin
Franklin Caswell born May 22, 1828. We do not even know who his mother is
since he was put on the ship and sent away and his mother had died. Csan
anyone help with this?

Some information for those working on the origins of Thomas Caswell.
My appologies, but I don't know where I got this information, I did not
look at these publications myself.
The following is from "New England Families' Genealogical and Memorial"
by William Cutter:
Thomas Caswell who seems to have been the Thomas, son of Richard, above
mentioned, was one of the first settlers in Taunton, MA., which was
incorporated in 1639. He reached the colonies in about the year 1640,
and tradition states that he came from Somershire, England. He had 10
children, five sons and five daughters: Stephen, Thomas, Peter, John,
Samuel, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Abigail, and Hester.
Samuel, the fifth son had children: Samuel, Henry, Ebenezer, nathaniel,
Damaris, Mehitable, Ruth, Anne, Johanna, and Rebecca.
"The Mayflower Descendant" has two additional children for Thomas :
William & Sarah, and says that the father of Thomas Caswell was Thomas
Caswell.
Information for Richard Caswell from WFT Pedigree 534:
1. Richard Caswell was born WFT Est. 1567 - 1596, and died WFT Est. 1621
- 1681. He married Mary Slany WFT Est. 1593 - 1636, daughter of Richard
Slany.
Notes for Richard Caswell:
The following is from "New England Families' Genealogical and Memorial"
by William Cutter:
Richard Caswell, Esq.of London, father of Thomas Caswell born 1618,
married Mary, daughter of Richard Slany, Esq. of the county of Salop,
and among their children were Thomas and George, the third and fourth
sons.
Children of Richard Caswell, and Mary Slany are:
George Caswell, b. WFT Est. 1597 - 1637; d. WFT Est. 1610 - 1716
Thomas Caswell, b. October 20, 1618, N. Curry Sommersetshire, England;
d. Aft. 1697, Taunton, County of Bristol, MA.
Also there is a Reference made in "The Babbit Family History" by Wm. B.
Babbit, 1912, that the wife of Thomas Caswell was Mary Sanderson of
Boston.
I'm probably just adding confusion to this mystery, but I thought I
would throw it out there..................

message: Thanks to all the wonderful help of many genealogy fans out there, I have my husband's Caswells back to Hopkinton, Rhode Island in about 1800. Our Allen CASWELL was probably born there around 1775 (I believe his father was William). Allen's son, Anthony, was b. 23 Dec 1796 in Hopkinton, lived for a while in Connecticut, moved on for a brief stay in Charleston, SC, then on to Schenectady, NY where he worked on construction of the Erie Canal. He settled in Hinsdale (Ischua), Cattaraugus County, NY in 1825, married Sally LOCKWOOD in 1829, raised a large family and d. in Ischua 29 Apr 1871.
I am trying to find Allen's wife and firm information about his parents and other ancestors. His wife's name was Elizabeth in his will, but I don't know if she was Anthony's mother who may have been a daughter of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Thank you for any information. Advice and counsel gladly welcomed! And, of course, I'm always glad to share. Doris

If you get an advertisement from someone by the name of Bonnie Mansfield, 430
#1 Rick Court, Ridgecrest, CA 93555, offering to sell you "never before
published information" on family histories and DAR records for ONLY $25.00 -
don't bite! I did and I am so angry at myself I could scream. I'm not
usually one to fall for scams, but believe me I bit on this one hook, line,
and sinker! What I got for my 25 bucks was 2 folders with hand written sheets
giving me last names, book numbers, and in some cases page numbers. BUT, if
you want to see what information is in each of those "histories" you have to
send an additional $3 to a different person. Oh well, serves me right - I
know better than to trust everything I hear and read. You might pass this
info on to everyone you know. She got my $25, but I don't want her to get
anyone elses.

I understand the spinning head syndrome. I've got it from a severe case of
ancestor hunting in about 25 lines at last count! Anyway, I don't know
anything about my Caswells beyond Rhode Island in about 1800, so the Isle
of Shoals line is new news to me. Is that Wales? Or should I go back to
Geography 101? Is there a gedcom or family tree somewhere that I might
consult? Many many thanks. Doris
