Hi, Mark et al.,
I am on a ships-list and i have not found anything at all. If I do,
however, I'll be sharing with all the lists I'm on! You can bet on that!
:-}
Hey, Mark, just got back from the Isles. A WONderful place to hang out in
the wintertime for a couple of days. I got back on the mainland before
that horrible storm hit.
Cheers!

Hi Caswell group,
while looking through old copies of the NEHGR, i found an article
"Inscriptions, Exeter Ctr. Cemetery, Otsego Co., NY" in 111:301-303. the
article is longer than that but those pages were of interest to me.
on page 301:
John R. Caswell, 1820-1898.
Lucy Herkimer, wife 1822-1905.
Children of John & Lucy Caswell,
John H. Caswell 1856-1859.
Albert E. Caswell, 1863-1863.
Levi Caswell died Dec. 8 1831, age 53 yrs.
Asenath, his wife, died May 9, 1854, age 74 yrs.
Children of Levi & Asenath Caswell,
Lorana J. Caswell died Mar. 13, 1824, age 12 yrs. 1 mo.
Joseph Caswell died A.D. 1921, age 47 yrs.
Rosine, wife died Feb. 20, 1839, age 60 yrs.
Eliza C. died July 23, 1836 age 28 yrs.
Schuyler C Caswell, 1850-1932.
perhaps the date for Joseph Caswell is a typo, but that's how it appears.
1821 would make more sense.
on page 302:
George D. Dauchy, 1816-1901.
Lydia A. wife of Geo. D. Dauchy and dau of Elkanah & Lydia Higgins Died May
14, 1849, age 27 yr. 9 mo. 7 da.
George D. son of Geo. and Lydia Dauchy died Feb. 3, 1848, age 5 mo. 20 da.
on page 303:
Dorcas wife of Moses Higgins died June 16, 1829 age 83 yrs.
Lydia A. Higgins wife of Geo. D. Dauchy, 1821-1849.
Elkanah Higgins died Aug. 26, 1852 age 76 yr. 6 mo. 3 da.
Lydia, his wife died Mar. 11 1845 age 66 yrs.
from my files i have Elkanah Higgins, son of Moses and Dorcas (Brainerd)
Higgins b. Feb 23 1776, Chatham, Middlesex Co., CT., m. Mar 27 1800 (don't
know where) Lydia Caswell b. 1782 (don't know where), dau of ?. the
marriage of Lydia and Elkanah is listed in Lucy Brainerd's "Brainerd
Genealogy" simply as m. Caswell. several siblings of Elkanah moved to
Exeter per Brainerd Genealogy. apparently there was a Caswell family in
Exeter. i don't know how or if the one mentioned above is connected.
perhaps my Lydia was born in Exeter and the marriage took place there as
well. i have on order microfilm of old newspaper marriage and death info
for Otsego Co.
does anyone know these people?
thanks,
randy

Sorry, I'm really the last person to ask, as I don't do any research in the
USA. Perhaps some other members of our group can help?

Whilst reseaching for execution in Somerset I came across the
following item in the Sherborne Mercury. The interesting part
for me is to locate the whereabouts of Busselton Common.
I wonder if any of our members could enlighten me?
Sherborne Mercury, Tuesday, September 2, 1740.
Page 1 Column C County News. Bristol. Aug 23.
Saturday last about ten at night ended the assizes for the
County of Somerset at Bridgwater, when thirteen persons
receiv'd Sentence of Death, viz.
Edward TAYLOR for High Treason, in counterfeiting the current
Coin of this Kingdom:
John MILLARD, Cornelius YORK, and George MASTERS,
the three notorious villlains who committed so many robberies
and unheard of cruelties on Bedminster Down, and elsewhere;
William DERRICK, for a robbery on Busselton Common;
Richard KNAP, William Holliday, MAthew LEIGH, John BISHOP,
John CASWELL, and John SYMMONS, for divers felonies;
David CURTIS for burglary; and Edward HICKS, the noted
horse stealer.
Funny how the world goes around.
I first found out that my Casswell family from Trowbridge emigrated to
Canada and started the Dairymans Association Of Canada. During those heady
days, they invented a mix of ground up cheese rind and pimento and flogged
it to the natives (white natives that is). Subsequently they got tangled up
with the Kraft Bros. and the formula ended up as 'Cheese Whiz'.
Then, during my incarcaration in Canada (not at HMS pleasure) I discovered
the 'Froggy' section of the community were pouring Cheese Sauce over their
'chips' or 'French Fries' and calling this mush "poutine". A delight to any
cheese lover.
Then, only a couple of weeks ago, I was at a party (my UPS drivers' do) and
they served up Nachos ( a corn crisp) with a cheese sauce. But they mixed
in 'Salsa', a Mexican mix of hot spices and tomato, cooked like a chutney.
Well, this got me thinking, (thats not usually a good idea) and I thought,
"What if you mixed a good old Wiltshire Chutney with a cheese sause and
poured it over potato chips (crisps) or French Fries?
Well, tonite, I tried it, and to quote my favorite English comedian
'Jethroe', "Its Bloody Good!".
So, we have a new MOONRAKERS sauce!
Make a cheese sauce - or buy Casswells (I mean Kraft) Cheese Whiz, and mix
some chutney into it, then pour it over your fries, chips or nachos!
Its BLOODY GOOD!

Dear Mike
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your letter of 1996 about
Caswells of Taunton MA, I should be very interested to see the material you
have regarding the Wiltshire Caswells.
My own work on the Caswells of Taunton has been sporadic and still has gaps
in it. I have very clear information on my tree back to the early 1700s
(see the attached outline) then starting from Thomas Caswell of Taunton MA
(1618? - 1696/7) the work of George Freeman Sanborn Jr. leads me to believe
that there is a direct link to my lineage. GFS's work has been published
in the Mayflower Descendent, vols. 35 to 42.
it is unclear to me whether there is any connection between the Northants
Caswelis Judith Ross's lineage) and the Taunton MA Caswells. The
information I have received from GFS Jr has always led me to believe
Somerset LJK was the most likely birthplace of Thomas. However, I have no
worthwhile information about Thomas prior to his arrival in America in
1643(?),
By the way, I don't seem to have a contact address for Beulah Caswell,
could you possible let me know what it is. I have tried to access your web
site, but have been unable to. Presumably it has changed since 1996! My
wife, Stevie, has an email address - stevie. caswell@eng. monash. edu. au,
and is happy to correspond with you via this.
Apologies again for my tardiness,
Sincerely
Nigel Caswell

Dear Caswell Cousins,
It a new year so I thought I'd post this again in case there some people who
didn't see it before...
I don't know much about my Caswell line. I need help. My ancestor William
SLACK, b. 1780, MA or CT, m. Hannah CASWELL.
William SLACK was a son of Christopher SLACK who was from Attleborough, MA,
but went to Thompson, CT, before ending up in Northampton, MA, where he died.
I have not been able to find William's birth record in Attleborough. He must
have been born after Christopher left there.
Hannah CASWELL was supposedly born in CT, but I haven't found her birth
record. A couple of people told me she was a daughter of Jonathan CASWELL --
but this may simply be based on the fact that she had a son named Jonathan
Caswell SLACK (who could have been a grandfather or brother, rather than her
father?). Someone else suggested that she might be the Hannah who was a
daughter of Lemuel CASWELL of Tolland Co., CT.
I've looked at lots of CASWELL data, but I still can't figure it out. Any
ideas would be appreciated.
One other clue, these SLACKS were mostly millers by trade and usually lived
along rivers and in mill towns. By any chance, were any of the CASWELLS into
milling??
Thanks for any help!
