Hi, Priscilla!
I wish I could keep up with all the tons of e-mails about the 5
different families i'm working on, but my "real" job is really hectic.
can't wait to retire! (in 20 years....:-{
My folks are coming out to be with us for Christmas starting Dec. 8th
for a month. Can't wait!
Mark is from Rye, I think. (Mark Caswell). I've meant to look him up
when I'm up there in the summers, but haven't had the time.
Take care and keep digging!
*kathy
Bob! That was so wonderful of you to enter all of that and send it to all
of us! It doesn't fit into my Isles of Shoals family (yet!), but who
knows; someday i may need it. Thanks again!

Haven't seen your folks for a while. Bill and Eddie just got home from
hunting. Didn't get anything. What else is new. Would love to hear from
you.

hi I saw your note to mike and I can quote an article from Charles
Holloman noted authority on Gov. Richard Caswell of NC. "CASWELL,RICHARD
(1685-24Apr 1755) colonial merchant, planter Md legislator...was a
native of London. HIs fathers family was notable among the ranks of the
English gentry; the lineage is traced to Henry Careswell (ff 1440) of
Staffordshire, whose son,Robert Careswell became a prime officer in
househole of Thomas, Lord Stanley, the first earl of Darby.Robert's son
Jjohn Caswell of Wedon, shortened the surname, and this spelling was
perpetuated among his descendants.Richard Slaney Caswell, father of thr
Richard who emigrated to America, used the Caswell spelling in
registering his lineage and his ancestral coat of arms with the royal
heralds during the visitation of London in 1634." Maybe this will
helpPerhaps Ricahrd Caswell and Mary Slaney had 2 sons,Thomas and
Richard Slaney. Richard Slaney's wife ____Smith's people were engaged in
overseas trade with the colonies.Dr. Holloman is most reliable-he he
always indicates ifwhen something is unproven. From Clair Hadleyeswell

Thaanks so much for info on Martins children. Im researching his son
William of Pitt,Craven, and Lenoir. The will of Elizabeth Harrison
Murphrey of Dobbs was made 25 Oct.1788. In it she leaves "the track of
woodlands at Sandy Bottom" to her daughter Nancy Caswell. That land was
the same land Wm. Caswell was living on in 1830 and 40,according to
Russell King a noted genealogist of Kinston (compiler of Lenoir Co
censuses. Also, in the Quarterly Review of E.Carolina Gen. Soc. Vol.4
there are Murphrey notes listing the children of John and Elizabeth
Murphrey; Daughter Nan (called Ann in some records)m.Martin Caswell. I'm
quoting. So I'm sure that the mystery is now solved as to Martins wife.
There are also letters of Gale Murphrey,a sister of Nancy, which refer
to "sister caswell" and mention Dick (Gov) Caswell.Dated 1770.
Finally,we know who brothers Ben and Samuel married. Hope this is of
interest. Their son Wm was in Pitt by 1810-age 26-45;so had to be born
later than 1762.I have him born in 1780,very late in the marriage, but
no records to prove this.Anybody know abt. Wm-wife or children? Happy to
share-Clair Hadley clairhadley(a)erols.com
This certainly seems a mess to me, but I'm not following these lines. I've
seen this same Richard caswell in the Taunton Ma line, and now in the N
Carolina lines.
Can't the 2 groups doing these lines get together and sort this out please?

Comments: Im tracing Martin Caswell, brother of Gov.Richard Caswell of N.C.
Ive proven that his youngest son William lived in Pitt Co. in 1810 and seems
to be in New Bern in 1820 and back in Lenoir in 1830 and 1840. Id like to
prove he married Harriett McIlwean Emery and had daughters Harriett and
Rosaline. My 3gr grandmother was Rosaline Caswell Hall of New Bern

Hi Judi,
Did anyone ever answer your request for Carswell information?
There were Carswells who emigrated from Scotland to Lanark in Canada. One
family were from Hillhead, Barony, near Glasgow. Robert Carswell 1778-1872
and wife Helen Russell. Allan Carswell, Jr. and wife Janet Harvey. David
Carswell and 1st wife Jean Muir, 2nd wife Janet Mitchell.
Robert Carswell came to Canada on the ship "George Canning" in 1821.
Above info from "The Lanark Society Settlers" by Carol Bennett.
If anyone connects with these families, I would be glad to do some look-ups
for them. I am not personally researching Carswells.
Susan
