You may have help me come across an interesting connection. I have posted
previously my interest in one Samuel Caswell of Belchertown and Springfield
MA (which isn't far from Northampton). I think we may be researching some
parts of the same families. I have a great-great grandmother named Martha
Pease CASWELL and a great-grandmother named Rebecca SLACK Barrows.
Previously, I have had absolutely no connects with anybody in my family
line.
There are three areas of coincidence. 1) the Caswell name in the area of
Mass. north of Springfield. My Samuel Caswell lived first in Belchertown,
northeast of Springfield---which is near Northampton 2) Samuel Caswell
married second Martha Pease, a member of Pease family, an old-line family of
Enfield Conn., immediately south of Springfield and lived in Springfield 3)
the first child of Samuel Caswell and 2nd wife Martha Pease (born Springfield
1811) named Martha Pease Caswell married one William Huntoon. Their first
child William Huntoon, born 1834 in Westfield MA (near Springfield) married
one Rebecca Slack Barrows of Attleboro MA. Rebecca Slack Barrows was
granddaughter of Rebeckah Slack of Attleboro MA. I have not worked the SLACK
line in Attleboro (Attleborough) although I can do so easily/
Here's my notes on Samuel Caswell:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------
From History of Belchertown in the 18th Century Wm. E Shaw Newell Press
Amherst 1968, p. 101 "Samuel Caswell, Yeoman" signed the deed for the
meetinghouse (church and town hall).
Mark Doolittle, Historical Sketches of Congregational Church in Belchertown
MA 1852 pub at Northhampton: I can not find Samuel Caswell listed as a
member of that church. There is a mention of a Baptist Church.
Both above books mention that in 1727John Caswell bought a 1/6th interest in
the Belchertown MA area from the State of Connecticut--which had the rights
to it. He was one of 6 Boston residents in this. It was plotted by Timothy
Dwight, one of the town founders. I can find no mention of John Caswell in
the family records I reviewed (after 1765), but lots of it are faded. It was
mentioned in Doolittle that the divisions were carefully platted. No
documentation of any relationship to Samuel Caswell, but this area was
negotiated as State of Connecticut property, even though it is northeast of
Springfield and not in the area of Connecticut of today.
From "Springfield Families" by Thomas Warren, v 1, (A-E) DAR copied 1934-5,
listings for Samuel Caswell show Samuel Caswell, Belchertown married May 20,
1793 Ruth Frick, daughter of John Frick.
From Belchertown MA Family Records --- Samuel Caswell married Ruth Frick on
May 28, 1793. Three children listed: 1) Abagail 4-21-1796 2) Worthy
6-21-1798 3) Eliza Caswell 6-20-1801. No further mention (On Holbrook,
Fiche#9).
Daughter Eliza, married Daniel Ashley, then David A. Cadwell A second child
named Worthy is not further located. Wife Ruth Frick died 9-26-1806 a.e. 31
buried Springfield (Pine St. Cemetary)
From A Geneological and Historical Record of the Descendents of John Pease,
Sen. Last of Enfield Conn., compiled by Rev. David Pease, Springfield MA
Samuel Bowles & Co 1869, we get Martha Pease geneology. On p. 339 Part 1
Addenda "528. Martha m. ____ Caswell and settled in Springfield MA
backreference to Page 48.
From "Springfield Families" by Thomas Warren, v 1, (A-E) DAR copied 1934-5,
listings for Samuel Caswell show Samuel Caswell's infant child died
7-22-1816
and wife Martha died 17 March 1821 a.e. 43 He died March 1823 a.e. 54"
Springfield Marriage Records, Holbrook, v1,232 & 246
Springfield Death Records, Holbrook page 131, Samuel Caswell died March 1823

I'll be glad to work further on the cross-connection. Please give any more
deatails you have. Do you have ability to read GEDCOM. I'll send mine if
you do.

Dear Caswell Cousins,
I don't know much about my Caswell line. I need help. My ancestor William
SLACK, b. 1780, MA or CT, m. Hannah CASWELL.
William SLACK was a son of Christopher SLACK who was from Attleborough, MA,
but may have gone to CT, before ending up in Northampton, MA, where he died.
I have not been able to find William's birth record in Attleborough. He
must have been born after Christopher left there.
Hannah CASWELL was supposedly born in CT, but I haven't found her birth
record. A couple of people told me she was a daughter of Jonathan CASWELL --
but this may simply be based on the fact that she had a son named Jonathan
Caswell SLACK (who could have been a grandfather or brother, rather than her
father?). Someone else suggested that she might be the Hannah who was a
daughter of Lemuel CASWELL of Tolland Co., CT.
I've looked at lots of CASWELL data, but I still can't figure it out. Any
ideas would be appreciated.
One other clue, these SLACKS were mostly millers by trade and usually lived
in mill towns. By any chance, were any of the CASWELLS into milling??
Thanks for any help!

<< Can you give me some more information on your Wm? How do you know when he
was born? How did he come to the States, by what vessel, sailing from which

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your response.
Here's what I have;
The Caswell family came of good English stock. The family line runs bac to
Henry Casresell (ca 1440) of Staffordshire, England, whose son Robert
Carsewell was a "Prime Officer in the household of Thomas Lord Standley, the
first Earl of Derby". A Grandson of Henry Careswell, John Caswell of Wedon,
was the first to adopt the spelling Caswell and also the first who is known
to have used the family crest and Coat of Arms. Thomas Caswell, a
Collateral, but distant relative of Governot Caswell, was the first of the
familly to immigrate to America. He came to Taunton, Massachuseets, about
thte year of 1645. It is from this Thomas that most of the Caswells of
America are descended, including the branch of the family established in
Albermarle County, NC in December, 1702, by the arrival of William and
Francis Caswell, persons whose public records and descendants can be traced
subsequently through the County records of Chowan and other countries.
It is believed that the progenitor of the Lower Northfolk, NC line of
Caswells was a William Karswell. (FTM list him as William CASEWELL). As we
find in the book Hotten's Persons Who Immirgrated to Virginia in The Ship
Safety, there was a William Kareswell, age 20, who came to Virginia the 10th
of August 1635, as found on page 123 of the 1962 reprint. This William
Karswell is, in fact, William Caswell as the Virginia records clearly show,
as being the original immigrant from the Lower Norfolk line descends. There
was no one else of similar name to be found in or ver near 1615.
The Caswells of NC Albermarle area (including Tyrrell County) were highly
respected people and people of sustance. The name Kazewell is a spelling
form used in a few cases by their attorneys or court clerks and also Carswell
or Karswell, but they almost always spelled it Caswell when they thenmselves
signed something.
The Kinship of Governor Richard Caswell to the Matthew Caswell of Lower
Norfolk County, VA, is probably not close, however there probably is common
ancestry in England where the name derived from Carres-well and the
Governor'l lineage traces to John Careswell ("Vulagarized" to Caswell) of
Weldon to whom Arms were issued. The VA William Karswell was in Va by 1635.
Governor Caswell's father, Richard, came from London to Jappa, Maryland (now
Harford Co) in 1712, when he was along in years. He was born in 1712, moved
to NC by the sea in 1747, settled breifly in New Bern and then joined his
son, Richard, Jr. (later Governor) at the present site of Kingston, Lenoir Co
(then part of Johnson Co) NC in 1748. He died there 24 April 1755, and he is
buried in the cemetery at Newington-on-the-Hill (now Grainger Hill in
Kingston.)
the above information was provided by a letter from Charles R. Holloman,
Raleigh, NC; author of Kingston and Lenior Counties, NC

Hi! Cheryl
The odds are that your William came from Wilts. William is a VERY Wiltshire
Caswell name. We have Wms going back to the 1300s in our line.
Can you give me some more information on your Wm? How do you know when he
was born? How did he come to the States, by what vessel, sailing from which
port?
Do you have a database on your line? We'd love a copy.

Dear Mike,
Please send us a copy of your new book - we are enclosing a money order for
$20.
We have not gotten very far with our research - there are a lot of cement
walls ! !
I am trying to find the protestant church records for Tipperary, Clare ~U
Limerick.
I have written to Very Rev Philip Knowles, at the The Deanery, Cashel, Co
TIP, with no success.
I contacted P. Manning in Kent ENG who has indexes for "Irish Ancestor', and
'Irish Genealogist Journals', who sent me the following:
Irish Ancestor Vol 1979 pg 132 Bapt First Pres Church of Newry, Co Down
1809-22 20 May 1819 Casswell, Elizabeth of Robert of Maghernahely. Vol 1984
pg 61 Protestants in parish of Shanrahan, TIP 1864 Mrs Caswell Vol 1985 pg
25 &~ 27 Protestants in Clogheen Union TIP ] 873-77 Mrs Caswell April 1873
Mrs Caswell Jan 1877, died at Shanbally
Irish Genealogist Journals
Vol 4 No 3 pg 219 Frayne of Co Wexford, Frayne of Canada
Amelia, dau of Lorenzo Frayne of Ballydicken married -- Caswell of Coldwater
-----ON (No date - her brother Henry was born 1831) Vol 5 No 5 pg 610 The
Ushers of Birr Kings Co
Rebecca, dau of Luke Usher of New York married Mr Caswell of Little Falls
USA (No date, father left property in will in 1828)
The name was not found in any other indexes that he holds. The joumals are
held by the Irish Genealogical Research Society, 82 Eaton Sq, London
SWIW9AJ.
I have read 'A New Lease on Life - Landlords, Tenants & Immigrants in
Ireland & Canada', by Catherine Anne Wilson 1958. This is about the Earls of
Cashel who had holdings in Tipperary & Cork in the south, and Antrim in the
North, with other properties in Waterford, Limerick, Dublin, and Kildare. I
am wondering if this might explain why we find some Caswell's in the south
and some in the north, although the numbers are very few in either place.
(We find Henry Caswell's marriage to Ann Ackland taking place in Cashel
Diocese)
I have joined Andrew Morris's 'Irish Chronicles', but have not gotten
anything significant yet. Http:/genealogy erg/~ajmorrisIreland/dist him
Just got the new Ottawa Branch News which has a blurb about the Wiltshire Co
Emigration Database. 2500 names. You probably already know about this, but
just in case, its <robinrobin(a)lenterprise.net Robin J Holley

I am looking for information on the line of William CASWELL. First one I
have record on was born in Essex Co, MA; 1/16/1794. Married Lydia T. Williams
in Taunton, MA; died 12/17/1864 in Tazewell Co, IL.
I believe his father was named William also.
I am also interested in finding out about the Caswell School. William
Caswell, Jr. son of the one in the first paragraph, bought land in Tazewell
Co, IL for a school in 1849; I would like to see if they were both educators.
My g-grandmother was Maude Caswell Cobb.
Thanks in advance.
