I am researching the name Caswell, and found this article in a clipping
sent to me by Rosemary Shipsey
( What was the clipping from, Rosemary?)
Does anyone know where I can find the TRIADS or BRUTS as described below?
Cassivellaunus submitted to Caesar, who took hostages, imposed an annual
tribute, and enjoined Cassivellaunus to abstain from harassing the
Trinovantes or their king Mandubratius. Caesar now left Britain, after a
stay of barely two months. In Welsh tradition, as preserved in the Triads
and the Bruts, Cassivellaunus appears as Caswallawn. Here much romantic
detail overlies a narrative in which an agreement with the main outline of
Caesar's account can be traced.

We have many other people who are researching Rhode Island and the carolina

Richard Caswell who was the governor.
There are some links to him on the Caswell webpage.

Hi All,
The farthest I have my Caswells traced back is to Wisconsin, abt 1879,
to my g-grandfather Mert Caswell. Beyond that seems pretty elusive for
now. I tried a Wisconsin 1900 Soundex to find the family, with no
luck. I currently have a Wisconsin 1880 Soundex on order and I'm hoping
to find him on that. His death record states he was born in Wisconsin,
so I should be around there somewhere. If anyone has any tips or info
please e-mail me.
Speaking of Soundexes--I did take notes of all the Caswells on the 1900
Wisconsin Soundex. If someone would like me to look up a name please
e-mail me.
Smiles,
Melissa (Caswell) Birkholz

Just when a 'certain person' thought he had us all convinced that 'his'
family was always upright and proper.
From "The Settlers of the Beekman Patent", Frank J. Doherty, vol 3,
pg334-339
The Caswell Family
'The family name was variously spelled as Casewell, Kisswell, etc.
'Robert Caswell, Sr. was mentioned at the meeting of the ConC of 15 May
1777 in a statement by Lt. Comfort Shaw: "Lt. Comfort Shaw appeared and
informed the Board that by Order of the Committee of Paulings Precinct, he
had apprehended and conveyed to this place as prisoners. Nathan Burdick,
Reuben Kiswell and Benjamin Buffington. ... The dep't further saith, that
there are several persons in that part of the Country, who were privy &
knowing to the above party's going off, Vizt Robert Burdick Se., Robert
Kiswell Se., Isaac Wilcox Junr, (etc)" [ConC 289]. The Committee ordered
Co. Andrew Morehouse to apprehend Robert Caswell and Nathan Caswell (and
others) and commit them to jail. Robert Caswell was noted as having a son
gone over to the enemy in Oct 1780 and he had to pay a fine of £14/7/9 as a
result.
'Reuben Caswell
'He was a Tory and appeared to make a statement: at the Committee meeting
held on 19 July 1777: "Ruben Caswell being duly sworn, Deposeth & saith
that lately while Peleg Sissell was confined in Goal in this place, he
informed the dept that he knew where a Number of arms were concealed, some
in a mill pond, & some in a Wood, that the said arms had been taken from
persons, friends to the American Cause, and that he, Sissell, particularly
had been with two other persons in taking away two musquets, two pistols &
a Cutlass from a Certain Old man while he was at prayer alone at home, the
rest of the family being gone to Church, that Sissell described the said
man as living about eight Miles from his (Sissell's) usual place of abode,
but did not mention his name. that Sissell farther informed the Dept that
he and several other Persons lately set out in order to go to the Enemy,
but being discouraged, returned back, that their intentions however, were
only to wait till the Enemy Advanced farther into the Country & then go
off. That the dept thinks that Sissell said, some of the above persons who
were thus to go off, were of the name Sole. (Most likely Soule, KG) And
Elias Prosser (One of the people called Quakers) somemnly affirmed that he
was present at the same Conversation between Sissell and Caswell and that
the same, as related by Caswell in the above Deposition is in Substance
True."
'John Caswell
"On 3 July 1777 Capt. Phineas Woodward and Lieut Comfort Shaw brought
eleven prisoners to the ConC on orders of the Pawling Committee of Safety.
These men were suspected of being involved in the killing of Lieut. Ephraim
Nichols at the house of John Caswell. John and Reuben Caswell were among
them and they were ordered held. [ConC 328]. Elisha West testified the next
day before the committee: "..that on Monday Evening last being the same
time when Lieut. Ephraim Nichols was shot, the Deponant lodged at the house
of John Caswell, where the affair happened; that he does not know what time
of night it was, as he was asleep, & did not hear the report of the gun or
guns..." [ConC 329]. On 4 Oct 1777 John Caswell and several other prisoners
were sent to the Fleet Prison in Esopus.
Upstanding citizens? I think not.

I am looking for a NICHOLS/CASWELL connection in KY. My great
grandfather, the first born son, was John Caswell NICHOLS (1860KY-1939WA)
He married Martha Isobelle PAGE in Newton Co, MO, in 1883. John's
parents and grandparents were born KY.
Joseph J. NICHOLS (1829 KY-1911 ID), married Mary E. ESTILL (1836 KY-1895
ID), daughter of John Estill & Mary Ann "Polly" McCoy), on 9 May 1853 in
Lexington, Fayette Co, KY. They appear in the Federal census as follows:
1860 Fayette Co, KY Dwl 227,
1870 Miami Twnshp Dwl 61, Saline Co, MO,
1880 Shoals Creek Dwl 224 , Newton Co, MO,
1900 Juliaetta Twnshp P. 233, Latah Co, ID,
1910 Coeur DAlene P.197, Kootenai Co, ID.
In 1883, Joseph and Mary and their children traveled the Oregon Trail and
settled in Kendrick, Latah Co., ID.
I need hints and help locating the grandparents of John Caswell NICHOLS?
Please E-Mail me directly, as I am not on this list.....YET!

Subject: CASWELL FAMILY IN ST. HELENA
Date: Monday, June 02, 1997 8:11 PM
Hi there,
I am searching for information about the origin of the CASWELL family on
the island of St. Helena.
My grandmother was actually born on the island of St. Helena. Her mother
was a CHARLOTTE CASWELL whose birth certificate has not yet been found(born
in 1878 or 1877). Her father was a Joseph Young who was born in Barbados,
West Indies.
It seems as though there are several Caswells on the island of St. Helena
and I am interested in where the family originally came from in England.
Any information or direction would be appreciated.
Please e-mail me at jbrome(a)ioa.com
