Manuel F. Castro
ONEONTA — Manuel F. Castro, 68, one of the founders of ABD Securities, a Wall Street
investment firm, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at his summer home in Oneonta after a long
battle with lung cancer.
Manny, as he was familiarly known on the Street, was senior vice president in charge of
operations at ABD when he retired in 1985.
Castro was born in New York City and reared in Boston and Bridgewater, Mass. He moved back
to New York City in his early twenties, settling in Brooklyn Heights, later residing in
Forest Hills and Bellerose, Queens.
He graduated from Hunter College and attended New York University Graduate School.
After retirement, he moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., where he turned to the theater, becoming
involved with The Charlotte Players. He played leading roles in The Players' Mobile
School Theater and featured roles in "Guys and Dolls" and "South
Pacific."
Castro and his wife, Janet, received the first Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Awards
from The Charlotte County Arts and Humanities Council in 1996.
Castro is survived by his wife, Janet; two children, Anne, a Minneapolis resident and
Michael and his daughter-in-law, Jeanette, Cooperstown residents and a half-brother,
Stephan Pivacek in Vernon, Conn.
A memorial service will be held in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, on Sunday, Sept. 6.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta,
N.Y., 13820; or The American Cancer Society.
