Scharf's account is a direct quote from Brown's Miscellaneous Writings by
Jacob Brown, Cumberland, Maryland, July 23, 1896. Unfortunately, it contains
some errors.
"John Custer and Emanuel Custer left their native county, Frederick, Va., and
went westward. . . " is wrong. The family came to Maryland from
Pennsylvania. John and Emanuel were sons of Emanuel and Anna Marie Fedele
(sometimes Mary Fadley). Born in Pennsylvania in 1754, Emanuel served in
the American Revolution. By 1790, he and his family are listed in the US
Census of Frederick County, Maryland. By the 1800 US Census they were in
Allegany County, Maryland.
Emanuel and Mary's sons who lived to adulthood were Emanuel, Jacob, John, and
Peter. (John is the grandfather of General George Armstrong Custer and my
3-great grandfather.) Son Emanuel remained in Allegany County, now Garrett
County. Jacob went to New Rumley, Ohio. Peter went to Clarksburg, West
Virginia, with
members of John's family after his death. John's son Emanuel Henry is the
father of the General.
Yes, you are correct. Every generation of Custers seemed to have at least
one Emanuel.
