Dear Marji,
First of all, WELCOME to your "extended" family - The Castor Association of
America! What a PLEASANT surprise to hear from you and to discover that you
had a copy of the Milo Custer book (plus others)... and even MORE important,
that you are thinking of donating copies to the CAOA Library. WOW! I can't
wait to see THE CUSTER FAMILIES book (1912). I bet it's got some VALUABLE
information in it!
When I was CAOA Librarian, I discovered that we only had one copy of the
Milo Custer Genealogies book. And, it was "lost" in the mail for over a
year! When I finally received it, I was so grateful (because there was no
replacement available) we decided to make copies (with permission) of
certain VALUABLE books in our CAOA Lending Library. We are in the process
of inventorying and deciding which books are so "rare" we need to copy. We
also need the funds to make copies (once we get permission)... granted, some
of the older books have passed the copyright (public domain) laws...
Also, THANKS for the compliment(s) on the News-Caster(s). We always
appreciate it when members take the time to provide feedback. It makes all
the hard work (behind the scenes) worthwhile.
Isn't the Paulus book GREAT? I was able to use it as a guidebook when I
took my Mom (Doris) and Sis (Brenda Custer-Randall) on a trip (a few years
ago) to Kaldenkirchen and Krefeld, Germany. It was equally helpful on a
recent trip to Germantown, PA.
Please send any books and any other material you wish to donate to the CAOA
Lending Library to: The Castor Association of America Lending Library, c/o
Doris Custer (Attn: Brenda Custer-Randall), 995 Highway 80 East, Calhoun, LA
71225. Be sure to ask for the "Library Rate" at the Post Office (but make
sure you add the words "Lending Library" to the address).
You can also contact Brenda directly via e-mail at: custerbren(a)aol.com
One more thing: If you haven't discovered yet (on our Web Site), Patricia
Caster (Membership VP and CAOA Web Master) has also set up a Castor
Association of America Listserv. This is a volunteer (free) list of
interested genealogists (not all are CAOA members but are interested in one
or more of our 17+ surnames) that share questions/comments/information with
each other. If you're interested, contact Patricia Caster. I have taken
the liberty of adding a few key CAOA personnel's e-mail addresses (see above
address lines) to this response. I am also sending a copy to the Castor
Association of America's Listserv. Maybe some of them will contact you...
Again, THANKS for your post!
LEADingly,
Ken Custer, President
The Castor Association of America

Ken, I just received all my membership items in the mail that I ordered when
I joined the CAOA. I have been reading the Library information on your web
site and noticed you are not lending the copy of The Custer Genealogies by
Milo Custer. I also noted you are interested in obtaining 'permision' to
photo copy that book, and you also would like copies of other 'rare' books.
Recently I had a chance to photocopy the Custer book and I have an extra
photocopy I would be willing to donate to the CAOA to loan out. There is no
copywrite information on Milos book and it was privately published in 1944.
I also bought a photocopy copy of his first book, THE CUSTER FAMILIES, the
one printed in 1912 after I found a hard copy at a rare book dealer who
wanted $200. 00 for the book. The photocopy I bought is readable AND did
not cost $200.00. This book has only 24 pages and I am willing to send you a
copy of it too. If anyone else would like copies, tell them to e- mail me
directly.
I am reading the book I bought on Paulus and the old newsletters I ordered.
I will be in touch with Joe and buy some more of the older newsletters soon.
I am impressed with the quality of the material and the publication is well
put together.
Let me know if you want the books and I will mail them to - - -??.
