Dearest (Cuzn') Pat,
I am so glad to hear that your Dad is recuperating nicely after such a
major heart surgery. I know I speak for ALL the CAOA membership in
wishing all of your (immediate) family the VERY best Thanksgiving ever.
Also, that our thoughts and prayers are always with you all (that's
"y'all in Louisiana!)...
I too am Thankful that my Mom, Doris, is continuing to "hang in there".
She was in her office (2 months ago now) at home getting ready to do
some genealogical research on her Father's side (Foster/Brooks). The
file was on the top shelf of a bookcase. She got out her step stool and
climbed up 2 steps. Just as she reached for the file, the stool fell
backwards and she fell - hitting her head pretty badly - and broke 3
ribs. She has been in severe pain for several weeks but, those of you
who know her, she was back to her normal routine after only a couple
weeks (even though she was in pain and had to sleep sitting in her
recliner)... Needless to say, the genealogical research is waiting for
me to help her with when I'm home for the Holidays.
I am taking Mom and Sis (Brenda) on the "British Heritage" Globus
(escorted) Tour to England, Wales, and Scotland next year (27 May - 10
Jun). This is a dream come true for the three of us. Here's the
itinerary: London (3 days), Hampton Court Palace, Salisbury,
Stonehenge, Torquay, Plymouth, Glastonbury, Bath's Roman relics,
Cardiff, Ludlow, Wedgwood, Llangollen, Chester, Liverpool, Grasmere,
Moffat, Woolen Mill, Glasgow, Culloden, Aviemore, Balmoral Castle, St.
Andrews, Floors Castle, Hadrian's Wall, York, Harrogate, Coventry,
Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, Stow-on-the-Wold, Churchill's burial
place, Oxford, and Royal Windsor...
If anyone wants to join us, let me know! We'd be glad to have some
company!!!!

Subject: [CASTOR-L] My Dad's surgery
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that my family has a lot to be thankful
for this
fall. My Dad, Garnett Turner who some of you met at the reunion in
1996,
had a heart attack on Friday the 13th and then quadruple by-pass last
Fri
and is doing well. He was walking the hall less than 24 hours after
his
surgery, and is planning on going home tomorrow (Tues.)
My brother and sisters and I have been taking turns staying at the
Charlottesville, VA UVa hospital with our mom since Thursday. I just
got
home from my shift about an hour ago.
On a family history note, a college student from Fulks Run (in Brocks
Gap,
Rockingham Co., VA) is doing her senior paper on Brocks Gap. She will
focus
on 3 families who have lived there for over 200 years, and naturally
the
Custers are on the list. Her professor is very excited about her
topic, and
told her that the rest of the class is making up things, but she has
access
to original documents for the area. Her paper only has to be 40
pages, but
she easily could have a book on the subject. She's lived in Brocks
Gap all
her life, but her parents have only been there for about 25 years.
We'll
have to adopt her into the Custer clan, I suppose. She lives near the
Conrad Custer farm.
The student says after reading so many documents and learning about
these
old settlers, she is beginning to feel that she knew them personally.
That's the way I feel about most of them. Especially when you get
into the
photo collecting end of research, it really becomes a "personal"
relationship with these settlers.
That's the news for tonight.
Your Cousin,
Pat Ritchie
