Robert Castor was born in Holmes Co., OH in 1822 and came to this
section with his parents, John and wife, when 19 years of age. At the
beginning of the war he was enrolled int he state militia and saw
active service in the closing year of the great struggle. John Castor
and wife are buried in the Old Union Cem and Robert Castor and wife
rest in the Winston Cemetery. The name of Castor has been linked to
Daviess County hisotyr since 1840 nearly 100 years, and many
descendants of the original settlers still reside within its bounds.
The clan holds annual reunions at Kidder the last Sunday in Aug each
year and have an organization to maintain the family history. John
Castor Jr better know to our people as Black John to designate him from
tohers of the same name spent nearly all of his sixty four years here
coming from Ohio in 1841 at the age of 10 years. he ws the father of
Mrs. Almeda Crute, wife of J. H. Crute, and they now reside in Winston.
