Hi Sam, It is confusing with all the name variations.
The CAOA (Castor Association of America) hosts this list
which means queries can be on any of the variations. We
also host the koester-L(a)rootsweb.com which is for Koester
research. We use the Castor-L as the main association
list. We encourage you to post your information on both
lists.
The Castor-L list has been in existence for over a year now
and the other lists are brand new. The Castor Association
is not limited to Castor or Custer. Please visit our web
site to learn more about the organization.
You can view our website at
http:\\maverick.rootsweb.com\caoa .
The genconnect boards are available for you to post queries
and to list information you have that will help other
researchers find you. On our web page if you click on
'Resources' in the menu it will take you to our resource
page. If you click on 'Rootsweb Matrix' you will see a list
of what is available for research purposes for all the
Castor variation s of the name.
The CAOA was founded in 1983 by 3 researchers 2 Castors and
1 Scholer who decided the name of the organization. Over the
past years CAOA has grown to include 17 variations of the
the name. There are 52 different lines represented by the
membership at this time. The surnames represented at this
time are Caster, Castor, Custard, Custer, Kaster, Kester,
Kusters, Kuster, Keister, Gerster, Kister, Koster,
DeCastorer and Keaster.
I did check into the CAOA archives and there are files on
Koester. A John Leonard Koester/Kester 1783-//, a Philip
Jacob Koester/Kaster 1777-1865, and a Bernard Heinrich
Koester 1839-1885. Members of CAOA are entitled to the
information about their direct line from the archives when
they join.

I too wonder about separating the Castor and Kester/Koester, etc. lists. I am a
Koester and have yet to find any information relative to that surname on the
Castor/Custer list. No offense meant.
