Hi Pat,
I was surprized when I went to the Indiana State Library to find that they
had microfilm copies of the Federal Census for all or most states through
1880. Their collection for 1900, 1910, and 1920 is limited to a smaller
number of states.
Check in larger libraries near where you live. You might be surprized how
much they have. I sure was. Check the WEB too. A lot of these libraries
have pretty good descriptions of what they have on their web pages. At a
lot of them you can even search their on-line catalog.
Ancestry.com periodically opens their paid stuff for free access. The
current period ends tomorrow, but you can search Census and other databases
for individuals there and find which county and page to go look for. (I'm
not promoting
Ancestry.com, but they didn't ask for much information to get
a username and password for this free access. I expect I'll get a sales
pitch via email when it ends.)
I've found some abstracted census data for Georgia and Florida counties
on-line through Rootsweb or GenWeb project sites. Once you get to GenWeb
you can pick a state or county within a state and see what info is available
online.
Good Hunting!
George

Hi Joan. I'm interested in your letter about the Federal Census. (I'm new at
this sort of thing!) Do you mean YOUR local library or do others have the
census too? Are there other ways to get the Fed. Census on line? Thanks.
Pat

Hi Alice,
Do you need someone to check the IN census for Elizabeth
Custer? The local library has Federal Census records for IN from
1820-1920. Indexes are available for 1820-1860. For Hamilton Co.,
IN only, they have an 1870 index.
I'm busy at present with the State Fair, but I would be happy in a couple
of
weeks to check a census for her if you can give me the
county, and area or township where you think she lived.
