Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
No apology needed. I would encourage replying via the list
because that way the data gets archived and anyone hoping to
find the information may not know who to contact.
I for one am interested in all the stories, not just my
husbands line. I find the history fascinating and who knows
something might jog someone else's memory.

It could be, but according to what I have, James Finnie was born in Scotland.
I have no idea how he ended up in Canada.
Is it all right with you if I put you on my buddy list. It would make
communicating much easier.

Sue,
Couldn't this James Finnie born in 1850 in Toronto be Susan Castor's husband?

As far as Susan Caster Finnie is concerned, the only info I have is from
Jennie's (her daughter) death certificate. I just says her mother was Susan
Caster, born in England. Jennie was born, however, in Toronto (according to
the death certificate) in 1850. By the time the 1871 census was taken she
quite likely was married and gone. There is a James Finnie who was 21 at
the
time of the census which would mean he was born in 1850. Maybe a twin, or
mistake in names? I'll have to investigate.

Sue,
Would you mind telling me where the FINNIE family went? I haven't followed
the CASTORs of Collingwood after the 1871 census 'cause this is very
collateral for me, but would be interested in knowing what became of the two
James Castor-Isma Muttart children Wm. Henry and Sarah. In fact, that's why I
am on this mailing list. You see, the Muttart family name is almost unique so
attempting to collect them is not beyond hope!
I believe I tried to find James Castor on the 1850 census index in NY, but
was not successful. I could have had someone on-line try it. Too bad I don't
keep better notes <G>.
Don't know if this will help, but James O. Castor was a plasterer and had a
second marriage to a Ruth (probably Ruth Collister who was living with the
family as a servant in the 1861 census.) There were several boys born to
them: John, Harry, Godfrey and Ira by 1871. He gives his religion as Wesleyan
Methodist in 1861. Isma was Catholic. I have a wonderful letter from James to
the Muttart family as Isma lay dying. That's what put me on to the
Collingwood area. If you have a connection, you might like a copy!
Glad to help. That Toronto 1850 data caught my eye.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I think this is the best information I have
gotten yet on this family line. It gives me lots of good clues to work on.

I appreciate your help on this. Until now, I didn't even have a clue where
to go. If you ever need any information I can help you with in Northern
California (the Napa Valley in particular) let me know. I will be glad to
help.

I don't know if this will be of any use to you, but on a collateral line I
have an Isma Muttart married to a James Osa CASTOR in Dec. 1853 in Buffalo,
NY. He was born in the USA but gives his nationality in the Canadian censuses
of 1861 and 1871 as "Spanish." The other Muttarts all lived in Whitby,
Ontario Co., Ontario in the 1850s, but there was lots of traffic to upstate
NY. Isma died in 1860, but the family was in Collingwood, Sincoe Co. in the
other censuses. You don't say if your Susan Castor Finnie was in Canada or
the US.

Was searching the www.pastconnect.com ( go to "search the database") and
found listed a photo album
1920-1930 which the submitter says is either from the Kesters of Elizabeth
WVA or the West family. The heading of the item is Hamilton Gilbert Kester.
Must prove family connection to get the album, which is free to a relative.

Sue,
The name Caster, Castor and many other variations came about when Englishmen
tried to spell Küsters. The Castor Association is not limited to the
descendants of Paulus Küsters but pursues all of the derivative names and
origins. There may be someone in the Association who knows about your
Caster family even though it doesnt seem to be related to Küsters.

This was given to me
While helping to bury a Vermont soldier who had been shot through the
heart George Custer sympathized with the man's widow, and not wanting to
reach into the dead man's pockets he slit them and removed a few
personal items."I then cut off a lock of his hair and gave them to a
friend of his from the same town who promised to send them to his wife.
as he lay there I thought of that poem: "Let me kiss him for his
mother..." and wished his mother were there to smooth his hair."
Today the pockets of slain soldiers are emptied and personal items
delivered to next of kin,
but slitting a pocket intead of unbuttoning it was a nineteenth-century
delicacy. and in these genteel days Custer refained from opening the
letters of defeated Confederate enemy, General Mumford, which quite
possibly contained information of military significance. He did not even
scan Mumford's letters: he tied them in a bundle, "Neither reading them
myself nor allowing others to do so."
Intimate correspondence might bring tears to his eyes, yet a blood
soaked field could leave him unaffected. At Bull Run in October of 1863
he enjoyed supper "under a stately oak that bears many a battle scar,
surrounded by graves, many washed by rain so that skulls and skeletons
are visible...There is heavy firing to the left."

Dear Tim,
Thank you for offering to send the books back to the library. Perhaps
they are ones which some other cousin will find most helpful.
I am only one member just as you are, but I would hope you would
stay with the Association. The officers are all volunteers.
Perhaps the librarian will write you to give you the correct name
and address for the return of the books, but in the latest issue June
1999 of the "News-Caster," the librarian is listed as:
Ken Custer
392 S. Marengo Ave.
Pasadena, CA 91101-3939
I am sure Ken will see that the books are sent to the rightful place if
this has changed.
Hope this will be helpful to you.
All best wishes, Grace Custer Ebneter

Hello All:
I have a question that I need to see if someone with the Castor
Association can answer
for me. I have been a member of the Castor Association for the past two
years but did
not renew my membership this year due to a Conflict with the current
President of the Association. What I need help with is that after
requesting books from the associations lending library and it taking two
years to get them since I no longer am a member of the association I
need to know where I need to send the books back to to return them. So I
hope that someone can please email me of where to send the books to so
that they are returned to the associations lending library and so that
all ties with me and the association are totally servered. Thanks and be
waiting to hear from someone soon. Tim in Oregon
Dear Jo,
Isn't Linda Terrell wonderful to share her knowledge gained through 40
years of studying the life and times of General Custer? I am so happy
she is joining the CAOA. We Custers (spelled various ways) have
probably all been intrigued with the character of General Custer, but
have not studied the primary sources as Linda has done. TV and the
movies have distorted the true story of General Custer. Fact is often
much more interesting than fiction. I always turn to Linda for the
truth about Custer. She has always been willing to enlighten me. I am
so happy that all members of the CAOA who have an interest in General
Custer now have such a resource as Linda for answers to their questions.
Love, Grace
