The descendants of Jonathan Custer of Berks County, Pennsylvania are
listed on my Family Tree Maker report on this page:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/e/b/n/Grace--Ebneter/GENE49-0004.html
Again the only proven wife for his son, Peter Custer who settled in
Berkeley County, VA/WV, is Elizabeth as named in Peters will which was
probated 8 March 1841. There is no record showing that he married an
Elizabeth Cudimagester.. If anyone has a document proving otherwise, the
descendants of this line would greatly appreciate this proof. A
maternal line is just as important to descendants as the paternal one
and we would like to have this matter settled.
Again, I always welcome corrections and further information
supported by documentation such as court records, but not necessarily
word of mouth.

I have listed the descendants of Peter Custer who settled in Berkeley
County, VA/WV on this page of my Family Tree Maker report:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/e/b/n/Grace--Ebneter/GENE49-0005.html
There is no document to date verifying the wife of Peter Custer as
Elizabeth Cudimagester. The descendants today are still searching for
such a document. One of the daughters of Peter and Elizabeth was named
Catherine E. and perhaps Elizabeth's full name was Catherine Elizabeth.
Peters will (which is included in my FTM report) was probated 3 March
1841. He names Elizabeth as his wife. I did find a record for the
marriage of Peter Coster to Elizabeth Fleisher by Rev. Boos in Berks
County dated 28 Feb 1781. The first child was born 10 Dec 1781 in
Pennsylvania (Bible record of Jonathan Custer in the PA Archives). The
death record for Peter's son, Mark, Sr., was given by Mark, Sr.'s son
John P. Custer and named his grandmother (Mark, Sr's mother) as
Catherine. This is why some people thought there might be two
marriages, but there is no proof of this to date.
The children of Peter are named in his will which can be found
published in Milo Custer's "Custer Genealogies". Many of the children's
marriages are found in Berkeley County marriage records. Further proof
for the children of Peter may be found in the records of the Ball
Association for the distribution of the Joseph Ball estate.
I hope this will be helpful to future researchers of the Peter
Custer family line. Beware of any genealogy which does not give sources
or documentation. I welcome corrections and additions supported by
documentation.

A Custer was working in Lansing during World War II in the Nash Kelvinator
Factory. He was from Chicago, and an elderly gentleman. My sisters were also
working in that factory. My father told my sisters that this man was a
distant cousin, but Kathleen does not remember the name. Can anyone help
with this Custer?
There was also a Custer family descendant in the Duck Lake area, near
Charloote, MI. That, again, is near Lansing. The descendant was an elderly
grandmother. Her grandson lived in a house that was near to the architecture
structure of my grandfather, Frank Lincoln Custer, Evart, MI. I recognized
Grandpa's style of building, so possibly learned of the same person as
Grandpa Custer. Does anyone recoginize Duck Lake? nbrice(a)net-port.com

Hello all,
For folks just starting research, I'd like to share with you that you don't
always have to buy CD-ROMS and books. Remember to use your local libraries!
When I moved to South Carolina from Virginia, I didn't even bother to look
in the history room of the local public library, thinking why would they
have Virginia records `way off in South Carolina. When I finally checked,
the SC library had more VA records than my local Virginia library had at the
time! They had census records on microfilm, census indexes for VA, and lots
of books on the part of VA I was from.
Even if your local library doesn't have the records that you need, they can
order microfilm of original records through several sources.
At the small church libraries of many churches of the Latter Day Saints
(Mormons), you can see the indexes of all the court records they have
microfilmed. For a nominal fee of a few dollars, you can rent the microfilm
and use it right in their chruch library.
When I lived in South Carolina, I rented microfilm for marriage records,
deeds, and voting records for Pendleton County, WV. It was great! For much
less than the cost of gasoline to drive to Pendleton Co., I could sit in the
comfortable library and research the court records of the county. It was
even better than going to Pendleton County - I didn't even have to lift
those heavy court record books!
Your local public library can rent microfilm for you, too, from other
sources such as a state library. My local library charges $4 per roll.
I've rented the property tax list for Rockingham Co., VA and was able to sit
in Winchester and copy tons of data from it for less than the price of a
fast food hamburger. Most public libraries have a microfilm reader-printer
that will let you make photocopies.
If lots of your families came from the same area, you can even buy microfilm
for about $10-15 per roll from AGLL (American Genealogical Lending Library).
I don't know the current membership rate, but it used to be about $30 a year
to belong, and they sent a huge catalog of their available titles. You can
either rent or purchase the microfilm from AGLL when you are a member. I
bought all the census records of my Rockingham County because I use them
frequently. You can take the films to your local library to use.
And now many libraries are ordering the CD-ROMS, so you don't have to buy
them. So many of our ancestors were in Pennsylvania at one time that I'm
sure most local libraries are trying to stock up on the PA records as they
become available.
Our historical society library is also starting to stock up on the CD-ROMS
for genealogical research.
So, my advice is to save your money and check out the resources of your
local public, historical, and Mormon libraries. Even if you live far away
from the county you are interested in, your local library can help.
Good luck on your researching!

Who are these people and who was Jacob's brother? Is Brookfield in Trumbull
Co., OH?
Jacob and Mary Custer came by train to Missouri from Hamilton, OH during the
Civil War. They were met at the station in Brookfield by Jacob's brother,
who took them and their possession in a big wagon to the Custer farm. This
farm is located about halfway between Greencastle and Spickard Missouri.
Jacob's father was a brother of Emanuel Custer who was the father of
George Armstrong Cuter. This information was from Clara Hanna Custer's diary
and from information from Bonnie Custer Spencer, daughter of Frank & Edith
Custer. I have Clara's Obituary and in it states that she was going to
school while living with relatives in Dana, Indiana, when she met her
husband John Fisher Bell. They were married in Stricklerville, Missouri then
returned to Dana, Indiana for about 3 years before moving to Greencastle
Missour. (Informant)

Searched for what information was incorrect. I would like the correct
linkage of Jacob Leatherman Custer. Would like his descendants. I am trying
to connect J. W. Custers, Hastings, Barry Co., MI. It is important that I
have the correct lineup. It can help in establishing the J. W. Custer of
Hastings, the Prohibition speaker. I'm trying to find the next step back to
Judah's father. This J. W. Custer may be the key. If incorrectly linked,
will change the course of where search should be taken next. Thanks. Norma

The Paul and Sarah Ball Custer line has been proven not to be related to
the Washington family of Virginia by any documentation to date. For
further information please check my Family History Report at this link:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/e/b/n/Grace--Ebneter/GENE49-0001.html
Go to next page until you reach the page on Paul and Sarah Ball Custer.
I have included the proofs offered by Milo Custer, Donald M. Custer, and
Margaret Kinsey. I hope this will prove helpful to future researchers
of this family line.
Sincerely, Grace
