Dear Michael,
Thank you for sending the corrections to Donald's research on your
family. With my own family he has my grandfather's children listed
under my grandfather's brother's name as his children. I am sure Donald
would have corrected this as his work was very methodical. The
important thing is that his work involving so many descendants gives us
clues for continuing our own research and connecting us to Paul and
Sarah Ball Custer. Chester Custer has made further corrections to my
immediate family and may have also been able to make corrections to
yours in Vol 16, " The Descendants of Peter Custer".
I will save the corrections you sent and add your page to my copy of
Donald Custer's work.
Love and all best wishes to you and your family, Grace
Hello, Michael and others,
I am keeping a burial site data base which includes lots of Custers, and which
I will pass along to the Castor Assoc from time to time as I update it.
Anyone who'd like to send me burial site info is welcome to do so. (I'm not
into pictures at this point). Please include name, dob, dod, spouse or child
of as known, etc. I'm including allied families as I receive them, within
reason. Please also give me some info about the cemetery, the address or
brief directions like "just west of whatever on route whatever."

Hello Grace,
I have a few things that are different, the most notible being
that Hannah Married James Wilson Hannah the H. was most likely a
misinterpitation. As for dates I would not go changing anything until I
reverify my documents. I have pictures of near all of the Custer and Hannah

SMITH {from SWITZ} [BRENNER, ?]
This is found in the unfinished research of Donald M. Custer:
"6. JACOB (son of PETER and ELIZABETH CUSTER) b. Oct. 24, 1790 Married
MARY KINE, b. Nov. 6, 1793. They were married May 5, 1814, according to
their family Bible record. They moved to Indiana, and from there to
Edgar County, Illinois. He died in Edgar County, December, 1887.
Children: CATHERINE, WILLIAM, MARY, SARAH, ROSANNA,
HANNAH, JACOB, LYDIA, LUCINDA"
There are several pages on the above children and their descendants and
then he gives:
"HANNAH, B. June 15, 1825 m. Feb 11, 1845 JAMES H. HANNAH He was
born Aug 10, 1821. They lived in Sullivan Co., MO. She d. Oct 30,
1902; he June 14, 1901"
Among the children of Hannah and James H. Hannah is:
"ALBERTINE ISABELL CUSTER, b. Sept 1, 1849, m. JOHN E. WATSON Sept 24,
1865."
The source of much of this information is given as Mrs. Marjorie Custer
Riddle, Milan, MO.
I hope you will find this helpful in your research, Michael. We do have
a copy of Donald's work in the Castor Library which you may borrow as a
member. Remember there may be errors as Donald was still working on
this research and it is not completed. In my immediate family I found a
mistake which I believe Donald would have corrected.
Also, I am not a professional genealogist. Additions and corrections
always appreciated.
Love to all, Grace
This is in answer to Michael Watson's query, but thought there may be
others out there who are descendant's of Peter who might send additions
and/or corrections, too.
Children of Peter are named in his will as John Custer, George
Custer, Margaret Baker, Mark Custer, Jacob Custer, Reuben Custer,
Hannah Hays, and Catherine Hens (some question about the deciphering of
this name).
There is a copy of this will in Milo Custer's "Custer Genealogies" 1944
and in Donald M. Custer's "Descendants of Paul (Son of Arnold) and Sarah
Ball Custer" 1974 (Donald states in the forward that this work is
unfinished and he is now deceased) I plan to type a copy in my own
genealogy page. The will is dated 8 March 1841. Chester Custer has
published 32 volumes of his Custer research. "The Descendants of Peter
Custer" is Volume 16 and may be ordered through the Family History
Library of the Church of Latter Day Saints nearest you.
I have not been able to find a document of any kind with the name
Cudigmister which is the name one source gave Donald as the wife of
Peter. I did find a record of marriage for a Peter Coster and Elizabeth
Fleisher 28 Feb 1781 Berks County by Rev. Boos. This date would be a
logical one as their first child, John, was born 10 Dec 1781. I have
sent a request for research in the Palatines to America Library in
Columbus, Ohio for any record of any Cudigmister (various spellings)
they may have.
Will continue with Michael's family in next message.
All best wishes, Grace
Dear Michael,
Donald M. Custer's research of the descendants of Paul and Sarah Ball
Custer has your Hannah listed as a child of Jacob Custer who married
Mary Kime. Jacob's father was Peter and goes on to Jonathan, Paul,
Arnold, Paulus. I am descended from Peter's son, Mark, Sr. I would
recommend Milo Custer's 1944 book, Donald M. Custer's Descendants of
Paul (son of Arnold) and Sarah Ball Custer, and Margaret Kinsey's Ball
Cousins, and the Castor Association's Descendants of Paulus and Gertrude
Doors Kusters for further research. I would be happy to help you with
any further questions. Our library has a copy of Donald M. Custer's
descendants of Paul and Sarah Ball Custer listed. This is one of the
benefits of being a member of the Castor Association as they will loan
their holdings to members for cost of postage.
All best wishes, Grace Custer Ebneter (your cousin)

Hi all,
Following is a bit of what I found on three sheets of paper in Missouri.
The pages were research done by a couple of cousins of mine [gone some
years ago] perhaps in the 1960's. My personal documented research ends with
Hannah CUSTER below and I am now embarking on verifying the information on
those pages. Jacob and Peter are my main focus because I suspect Paul and
Jonathan. One piece of information which I am trying to follow up, is a
diary entry that claimed hat Jacob's father was George A. Custer's uncle
which would imply Peter in my list. Help Welcome.

Love to all, Grace
Dear George,
Thank you for your inquiry. Do you have access to interlibrary loan? I
think "Ball Cousins" by Margaret B. Kinsey contains good sources for
further research into the ancestry of Sarah Ball Custer. I would be
more than happy to discover a closer link to the Washington family, but
have not discovered any reliable source. Margaret has a small
genealogical chart at the front of her book which shows Sarah Roades and
John Ball as the parents of Sarah Martha Ball Custer. The source for
Sarah Ball Custer's birth record is "Gwynedd Monthly Meeting Births
1690-1805" page 6. "1712 Sarah, dau. of Jno. & Sarah Ball 30, 10mo." I
do not believe earlier researchers deliberately misled anyone, but they
did not have access to records as we do today (many have only been
translated in modern times). It seems that E. W. Gans as
secretary-treasurer of the Ball Estate Association did a great service
to family researchers in preserving the actual records of the
Association, but then in the first few pages of Chapter XIV of "A
Pennsylvania Pioneer" published in 1900 he took data from Hayden's
"Virginia Genealogies" and mixed it in with the Pennsylvania Ball family
records. Milo Custer and Donald M. Custer researched the connections
and they proved to be in error. However, many people including Donald's
own family had the tradition that the descendants of Sarah Ball Custer
were closely related to the Washington family of Virginia.
I welcome any additions or corrections. My line has been fairly
easy to prove through Peter Custer's Berkeley County Will and Jonathan
Custer's Bible record in the PA Archives as well as all the more modern
records. The Joseph Ball estate helped tie it all together as Peter
mentions it in his will.
Hope this is helpful to you and other researchers, George. I am not
a professional genealogist and only want to help other cousins just as
my cousins have helped me.
All best wishes, Grace
Dear Grace,
Now that you gave us this information I was wondering do you know who Sarah
Martha Ball is? What I mean is who were her parents. Since you gave this
information to the list I have erased all info that had the
William>William>Samuel Ball lineage. The family tree that I have is at least
30 years old. Why would that person, who made this tree, put such erroneous
info on this family tree?

Milo Custer in his "Custer Genealogies" disproves another form of
the myth that Sarah Ball Custer, wife of Paul Custer, was closely
related to the Washington family by being the sister of Mary Ball
Washington, mother of President George Washington. He states:
"Careful investigation discloses that Mary (Ball) Washington had no
sister named Sarah, nor any who married a Custer. Further research
reveals that Sarah (Ball) Custer did have a sister named Mary, but that
this Mary Ball married a man named George Smith, and not Augustine
Washington." (Appendix page XXXIII which goes into greater detail)
Corrections and Additional Information Appreciated-Grace Custer

Donald Custer noted in his research that even his family believed
that Sarah Ball Custer was closely related to the mother of George
Washington, Mary Ball. He said that the DAR even accepted this, but it
was his understanding that they no longer did and that The Mary Ball
Association rejects it. Donald offers many proofs that this myth is not
true. Perhaps the Will of Samuel Ball is among the most important
documents he gives.
" WILL OF SAMUEL BALL
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I, Samuel Ball, being weak in Body but of
sense and memory thanks to God, calling to mind the mortality of my body
and knowing it is appointed for all men to die, I do make and ordain
this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows:
ITEM: I give to my loving wife ANNA CATHARINE BALL the use of my Negro
Man, Adam, during the time she lives my widow, and afterwards to my son
William Ball, and His heirs forever.
ITEM: I give to my son William Ball all my land and six Negroes by name
Daniel, Dett, Cloandy, Rose, Rachel, Ester, to him and his heirs
lawfully begotten of his body, forever, and fro want of such heirs then
as followeth:
ITEM: I give to my Daughter Margaret Ball five Negroes by name Jam,
Murriah, Milla, Kittener, Will, and a feather bed and furniture and a
mare Tillie and her colt and my horse Batcheller and if in case my son
William should die without heirs lawfully begotten of his body then I
give four hundred acres of land which is already bounded to my said
Daughter Margaret Ball and her choice of two Negroes belonging to her
brother, part of her and her heirs forever, and the rest to be divided
amongst the three sisters.
ITEM: I give to my daughter JUDITH HACKLEY two Negroes by name Cate,
Jack, to her and her heirs forever and four hundred and sixty acres of
land to her and her heirs forever in case her brother should die as
aforesaid.
ITEM: I give to my son William Ball all my estate that is not mentioned
already to him and his heirs forever.
ITEM: I give to JAMES POLLARD five acres of land bounded thus...to be
his and his heirs forever.
ITEM: I give to my daughter MARY GREEN twenty shillings. The reason I
give her no more is because she has had her part already.
ITEM: I do appoint my son William Ball and my two sons-in-law, John
Hackley and Robert Green to be sole executors of this my last will and
testament. In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this
sixteenth day of August in the year Seventeen Hundred and Fifty-one.
SAMUEL BALL"
Donald goes on to explain that the will was made in Culpepper County, VA
and that he included it to show that Sarah Ball Custer (30 Oct 1712 PA -
10 Dec 1779 PA) was not a daughter of Samuel as she was still living in
1751. This will of Samuel Ball shows that earlier DAR research which
stated that Sarah Martha Ball was born in Wicomico County, MD and was
the daughter of Samuel Ball was not true. There are other earlier
assertions that Sarah Ball Custer was closely related to the mother of
George Washington which Donald has closely examined and found to also be
undocumented and in error. He goes on to explain that the settlement of
the Joseph Ball estate shows no evidence of any relationship to the
Washington Family. Margaret B. Kinsey in "Ball Cousins" compiled a book
based on the distribution of Joseph Ball's estate between 1827 and 1858
which is a great help to researchers in sorting out the family of Sarah
Ball Custer and also shows no relationship to the Washington family.

Hello all. I'm new to the list, so I thought I would post my ancestor and
see if I get any feedback. Is anyone researching the Koster or Koester
name? My Wilhelm Koster was born in Hanover, Germany about 1813. He came
to the USA as a young man, probably about 1825-1830? He was apprenticed as
a cabinetmaker and worked at this trade his whole life. We have always
been told that he left a large family of about 5 to 7 brothers in Germany.
I'm not sure if he was born in the actual town of Hanover (Hannover) or the
principality of Hanover. We were also told that those principalities were
always fighting with one another then and that when boys became of age, the
army would come in and take them right out of their homes and throw them
into the army. We were told that he fled and came to the USA to avoid this.
I do not know his port of entry, possibly New Orleans or Philadelphia?
Alot of Germans came in through New Orleans and up the Mississippi River
and settled into the Missouri Wine Country region. Perhaps he came this
route. He could possibly have had a brother Joseph that came to Lincoln
Co. also. There were many Koster cousins there, sons of Louis Koster,
possibly an uncle to Wilhelm. Wilhelm married Mary Ann Kinion March 7,1850
in Lincoln Co.,MO. She was the daughter of William Riley Kinion and Rachel
Rebecca Cox. Wilhelm and "Polly's" children were: Mary Frances, Margaret
Augusta, Ellen Elizabeth, Sarah Frances, John William Thomason, Sophronia
Catherine, Lutisia, Elizabeth Ann, Bridget Amelia, Rachel and Rebecca.
They might also have had a daughter Louisa. If so, that makes 11 girls and
1 boy. They say Wilhelm didn't know a thing about farming and that his
wife and children ran the farm while he made furniture for the people of
Lincoln County. He died between 1875 and 1880, as I have a land record
showing he sold land in 1775 and he was not on the 1880 census with his
family. I would like to know if anyone else is researching Kosters from
Germany. They either spelled the name as Koster with two dots over the
"o", or they dropped the two dots and in place put an "e", hence Koester.

Here are the corrections to information on the John and Catherine
Valentine Custer genealogical record.
On the notes made at the Custer Cemetery in Harrison
County, WV there is no other known documentation that Catherine
Valentine Custer was born in Germany. The note taker said that
information was passed down through her family.
Of course Dorothy Davis wrote that "...Emanuel chose to
go to Harrison county, Ohio, where his great grandfather Emanuel had
taken up land..." was a typo or error and should be grandfather. (maybe
she was thinking of the General?)
John Custer was a resident of Allegany County, MD in the
US Census in 1810, 1820, and 1830. The US Census 1830 shows that he was
a resident of Allegany County at the time of his death.
"Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett Count" (MD) compiled
by the Garrett County Historical Society, 1988, McClain Printing, had
various misinformation about the Custer family. Included in the
inaccuracies is that John Custer was married to a Garlitz and also that
the family came from VA. An earlier publication by Brown was the source
of some of this misinformation. (this important information was sent by
a gr gr gr granddaughter of John and Catherine Valentine Custer)
