Dear Tom and Jo,
Another cousin, John Lambey, is descended from John and Rachel Morgan
Custer and is listed in the Castor Membership Directory for 1998. Tom,
did you check with John Lambey about Rachel Morgan? I know he, too, was
interested in any possible Morgan Morgan connection. I should explain
that the research on Peter Custer's wife is not conclusive. All the
references to his wife as being named Cudigmister go back to a single
source which is a person and no documents listed. I found a reference
to the Fleisher name in a marriage document in Berks County and listed
that in my research, but am still searching for any documentation on the
Cudigmister name (spelled anyway close) and have yet to find it. I
asked the Palatine Library in Columbus, Ohio to search for the
Cudigmister name (any spelling) which they were doing, but I have not
heard anything from them yet.
It is important for each person to do their own research to verify
what others have done when there is no documentation listed.
Jo, I am not a moderator of this group, just a member of the Castor
Association who volunteered to make a simple web page when no one else
did. Patricia Caster put together the Castor list service for us. Jo,
you are one of my favorite members as you, also, are always willing to
help others.
Tom, if you did not join the Castor Association yet, please take
Jo's advice and join. You will find all the information needed to join
on our web page.
Love to you both, Grace

Tom,
I checked my personal family database and found the family but nothing on
Rachel or their children. I then checked the Directory database and found
the family down to Peter and two of his children but not your John which
means not one in the Association to the Fall of t997 isted him as an
ancestor. I searched the Assoc Files and found John & Rachel and their
descendants listed. There wasn't anything about Rachel birth family.
If you are a member of the Assoc, you should received a print-out of your
ancestors as listed in the Assoc Files. These are only sent to members who
have joined the Assoc.
The moderator of this group, Grace Custer Ebneter, also descends form your
family line through Jonathon and she might have more information on your
Rachel Morgan.
Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Good luck in your search. If you
aren't a member, it only costs $10.00 to join. Really a bargain when you
see what you will receive. I know! I've seen your ancestry lineage!
Jo

Just cleaned up the Castor Association web site a bit as the first page
was looking a little crowded and wanted to keep it easy to load for
everyone. Added a second page at Further Links of Interest:

Would appreciate any further links anyone might have which would be of
help to any of our researchers of KUSTER, KOSTER, CUSTER, KUSTERD,
KUESTER, KESTER,
CUSTARD, KUSTARD, KISTARD, KISTER, GERSTER, CASTER, CASTOR, KASTOR,
KOESTER, KIESTER, KEISTER or other variant of the CASTOR name.

Good Morning to All!
I echo Grace's thoughts about Dana and his wife.
Might just be muddying the water but for what it is worth my Mother had
Custer cousins who moved many years ago from Wayne Co, IN to Southern CA,
especially around San Diego. One name I remember is Edwin who has sons of
Edwin, Calvin and Jonathan. He has a brother, whom I believe never migrated
to CA, whose name is Harvey Russell. As far as my family genealogy is
concerned, I find no other Russell listed and find no Dorthea. The
above-mentioned cousins, Edwin and Harvey passed away many years ago.
I hope and pray we find some family member for Russell. So sad to be all
alone at a time like this.
Jo
Dear Dana,
The name of Russell Custer does not sound familiar to me. I wish I
could help. I hope someone else will write who recognizes that name.
Thank you for passing the information on from Judy Jones. It was so kind
of both of you to be so thoughtful.

I have a rather urgent question for everyone on the Caster group.
My wife received a strange call today from a Judy Jones in Oregon.
Judy was calling all Custers in Southern California for help.
It seems she called a Russell Custer to inform him that his sister, Dorthea
Custer, had died. From what I understand, Dorthea was the last known
relative of this Russell Custer (who is rather elderly). When she informed
him, he became so emotional that he became dis-oriented and kept mumbling
that he was all alone, and he could not stop crying. Judy was calling,
looking for anyone related to him, to try and help him.
Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone out there.
I have looked in my records and I do not show anyone related to me.
Can anyone help. I have phone numbers of all parties.
Dana Custer
Dear Jo,
Thanks for sharing the fascinating information about Annie Castor Glenn,
wife of John.

I thought all of you might enjoy and appreciate knowing that John Glenn's
wife, Annie, is related to members of our Association. Her maiden name is
Castor and is part of the vast family which lists Benjamin and Sampson as
ancestors.

THANKS, Jo Ann!
Wouldn't it be GREAT to have Annie (and John) as members??!!?? How did
you learn this great news?
Be sure she is aware of our Web Site!
We'll ALL be keep John in our prayers as he makes history once again!
God speed, John!

Dear Phyllis,
If you like you could send me four copies of your pictures plus a
description of them by snail mail and I will scan them and make a little
page on the web. Then I will return your originals.

Hi Gang....
I've been scanning in the pictures I took on my trip to PA in preparation
for sending them to any of you who ask to see them. Apparently I scanned
them at too low of a resolution....and the first few came out very grainy
and not very nice. So.....it's back to square one and I'll try it again.
I may not have them ready to send until next week.....thanks for being so
patient.
And please......if you'd like to see them, you need to tell me now and I'll
add your address to the list.
Phyllis in Atlanta
Dear Phyllis,
Welcome back!!! So happy to hear you had an exciting trip. I must go
back up to Pottstown and check for Arnold myself. Wish I had known what
I now know when I lived right across the river from where his land was.
I probably walked on it and didn't even know it. There were still
Custers in Pottstown, but I didn't know they were cousins. One of my
sons plans to visit a friend up there and I hope he will check the
library for me. They may have some information deposited by the
Historical Society. Your idea to check out the Montgomery County
Historicial Society is a good one.
Patricia has gone on a trip to Texas and I am leaving to visit my
brother, George Custer, and family in Florida. Will look forward to
more details about your trip when I return.
Bye for now. Love and all best wishes, Grace

Hi Gang!
Just got back from Germantown......after a fascinating trip!
I've much to tell you and pictures to share.....and not much time to do
that at the moment. Unfortunately I have a business to run also....and
leave in about an hour for a quick trip that won't get me back here till
Sun pm. So the "whole story" will have to wait till Monday or
Tuesday......can you be patient a bit longer??
But...here's a quick overview....a teaser!!
Suffice it to say.....I spent time and film at Penn's Landing where our
group of ancestors landed. It's a great place. More on that later.
Then I drove over along the Schuykill and across to Germantown itself and
got a good feel for the countryside where they laid out their farms. I was
hoping to park the car and walk along that street to look close at some of
those houses and locations mentioned in the Guidebook we got last week.
However, as one of you folk pointed out to me before I left....Germantown
suffered massive "white flight" years ago and has suffered considerably for
it. Consequently, I felt far safer staying in my locked car and just
driving thru the area.....and then getting back on the freeway and driving
into more familiar areas......quickly!!
Undaunted, however, I went back the next day....when the Hist. Soc. was
open.....and spent a good share of that day trying to discover where Paulus
and Arnold's lands were right there in town. After figuring out where lots
#6 and #13 were....and then translating that onto a current street map, we
were able to figure out where they are today. I fired up my camera (and
my courage) again and drove the street one more time.....(shooting thru the
windshield!!) and as soon as I get those pictures scanned.....I can send
them to anyone interested - as attachments (can't send it to the list,
however so give me your individual e-mail addresses if you wanna see them.)
No time to tell you more......except that one of the lots holds a
McDonalds and a Dunkin Donuts.....and the other a Lutheran Church!!
;-)))
I also found the Mennonite Church a few blocks further where Paulus and
Gertrude attended....and one source says......where they were probably
buried. But no stones for them.
Wish I had had a little more information on Arnolds land location over
in Montgomery Co......and the Manatawney Church location. After much
thought and study, I finally elected not to go there since I had so little
idea of WHERE I was going!
Remember.....it's very heavily populated these days.....endless stoplights
and commuter traffic and trucks and honking horns and crazy drivers and (I
think) very poor directional signs.....etc.
I got lost a lot!! ;-))
It was just very discouraging....especially when I wasn't sure if Arnold's
grave was even marked with a stone etc. When I get some time next
week....I'm gonna try to find a website for the Mont.Co. Hist.
Society.......where we can ask them for more details on that church. Who
knows....maybe that Hist.Soc. will be able to provide us with a picture of
the church and a list of those buried there ...etc.
As for his farm land.....it's probably over-run with McDonalds and strip
malls too.....and would take some real searching to locate the correct
metes and bounds and find the land today. More time than I had in those
two days. Also....the map shows that Arnolds land ran right up to the
river and ....MOST of the land all along the Schuykill for miles and miles
has been taken up by Mills and heavy industry and you can't even get into
those areas. Yes, very discouraging.
A trip on up through Berks/Bucks Cos. would have required more time than
I had. I'll save that one for another trip. But I've driven it
before.....it's lovely Pennsylvania Countryside.....quaint old stone houses
and stone fences and rolling hills - after you get out of the urban areas.
While at the Germantown Hist. Soc. I was able to get copies made of a
map of the lots laid out there in town. Remember Pastorius kept an old
"Buch" with all that data in it. That book was copied in the
1700's-----another copy done sometime in the early 1800's.......and I
suppose it got old and brittle.....and a THIRD copy was done in the late
1800's. This copy was hand done on some vellum paper of some sort....which
has held up wonderfully well to date.....and so copies could be made. So I
have a copy of that map and it's easy to find lots #6 and #13. I can
share this map with any of you. (It's not the same very-early map that is
in our Paulus Book--this one is bigger and more readable!) It's the map
that helped us locate the correct land today. I also got some interesting
data on each piece of land....who owned it and when. More on that later
too.
OK.....more details next week. Sorry I have to "hit and run" here today
but I'll be back soon. I'm just glad I was able to sqeeze out a few days
to make this trip at all. Somehow the stories of these ancestors just
never come "alive" for me....until I've walked where they walked and seen
their land and graves. Now I "know" Paulus and Gertrude!!
By the way.....I saw a copy of the July 1986 issue of the Pa. Mennonite
Heritage (V9 #3) that has a great article titled "The Kusters and Doors of
Kaldenkirchen, Germany and Germantown, PA." It gives lots of detail
about Gertrudes family and how those early settlers were connected by
family ties. If you haven't seen it already.....it's available from "our"
lending library....or I can fax you a copy if you have a fax machine. I
didn't really understand her "connections" till I read it......and I've got
to read it again to get it really clear in my head. It was a complicated
family! ;-))]
I'm sure there are other good articles like this one......but I've only
just begun to take advantage of our "lending library" so this is the only
one I'm familiar with at the moment. You folks are far ahead of me on all
this....but I'm playing catch up as fast as I can!! By the way, the
surname file for the Kusters/Custers at the Historical Soc. was painfully
thin. A few letters dated back in the 1970-80's of people looking for
Custer cousins. That's all. Very disappointing there too.
YES.....Pat....please share the pictures of Brock's Gap with me at
this e-mail address. I hope to visit there someday too. ......and Grace
and Bob, let's dig further into the Manatawney story.
And now I gotta run......but we'll talk again....soon.......Phyllis
Dear Bob,
Have not read or seen a picture of a stone for Arnold. Your questions
are thought provoking. Think we need to do more research on this
subject. Hope Phyllis made it up to the other areas where we are told
that Arnold settled. It will be interesting to see what she discovered
on her trip to Germantown.
Let us know if you discover any other information.

hi Folks
Yes found the hamlet of Maxatawny Oley Twp some 6 miles from the boundary of
Hanover Twp
Questions still remain
Is that the location of the Maxatawny Cemetery ?
In as much as Arnold Kuster died 1739 in Hanover Twp (maybe Twp liines have
changed since then ) IS THERE A GRAVE STONE OF ANY TYPE FOR HIM IN THE
CEMETERY?
1739 seems very early for much of a marker that would last to the present day
ANY Answers, thoughts etc
THANKS
Bob Moore
Dear Pat,
Would be happy to make a little web page with a description of Brocks
Gap Heritage Day and four pictures. I just use a template. If you have
four snapshots handy I could scan them and make a page and write a
little description to enter at the beginning. I will mail the snapshots
back to you. My mail address is on the page at the end of this msg.

Check this site for map and compare with "The Descendants of Paulus and
Gertrude Kusters".
http://www.montcopa.org/montco/map.htm
Shows Lower Pottsgrove Township which is on page 20 of above book with
land of Arnold along the river.
Here are the townships in Berks County with MAXATAWNY listed. Page 22
of the book gives the burial site as MANATAWNY Cemetery in Montgomery
County and says he died in Hanover Township, Montgomery County..

Here is another map of Montgomery County:

New Hanover is right above Lower Pottsgrove Township
Here is a map of all the counties where you can see how close the
counties of Montgomery, Berks, Bucks, and Chester are:

You can create a map for Oley, PA 19547 on this page. It is near
Manatawny:
