When we last saw Bertha (see message "Bertha Casto"), she was married to one
Charles Wilson in 1901. We know that she later married Edgar Lieving.
Today we happily join our search looking for such a marriage....
As soon as I turned off my computer last night, I realized I needed to be
looking for Bertha WILSON, not Bertha CASTO, her maiden name. Sure enough,
I found a record for a Bertha Wilson but not to Mr. Lieving.
Bertha C. Wilson, 27, born Jackson Co., married on July 28, 1908 to William
D.L. Baker, 64, born Tyler, Knox Co., MO. (Source: Jackson Co. Marriages
1901-1925, p. 78)
Now if I found a record for a Bertha Baker to Lieving, we would know it was
Bertha Casto. Well, here it is....
Bertha Baker, 32, born Jackson Co., married E.H. Lieving, 41, born Mason Co.
on Aug. 30, 1912. (Source: Jackson Co. Marriages 1901-1925, p. 115)
As to what happened to Mr. Baker, I believe (but am not 100% sure) that this
is his obit, from 1911:
William BAKER
We are sorry to hear of the sudden death of William BAKER, of Angerona, who
committed suicide by taking carbolic acid last Saturday evening and was
buried at the Christian Church on Sunday evening. The motive, we learned,
was to financial worry, as the officer was there to close up his store at
the time of the suicide. Mr. BAKER was once a resident of Evans, and he was
liked by everyone and we feel deeply the loss of so good a citizen.
(Mountaineer, 9 June 1911)
While searching the obits, I also found this one:
Gale Emerson GODBEY
Gale Emerson GODBEY, the infant son of Clarence E. and Marie GODBEY,
of Akron, Ohio, was born May 27, 1942, and departed this life in the
Children's hospital of that city on September 19, 1942, aged 3 months and 27
days.
He leaves to mourn his departure, besides his parents, a little
brother, William Edward GODBEY. The paternal grandparents, E. J. and Lillie
GODBEY, of Cottageville, WV. The maternal grandparents, E. H. and Bertha
LIEVING, of Angerona, WV. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m.
at the Otterbein U. B. church by the pastor, Rev. Roy DAVIS, and interment
was in that church cemetery by the J. B. Vail mortuary of Ripley, WV.

A bunch of obits are on the Jackson Co. web site
(
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvjackso/JACK.HTM) but it has been my experience
that the search engine does not always pick up all that it should and it is
useful to look a little more thoroughly. For example, one thing they don't
mention is that the names are all in caps and your hunt will be more
successful if you type the word you're searching for in caps.
I hope this helps someone in the search for ancestors!
