Earlier, Colleen sent this:
Mr. LIEVING b. abt 1880 Jackson Co., WV married BERTHA M. CASTO b.
Jan
1880 Jackson Co., WV.
Source: LDS Ancestral File
I found this while trying to identify this Bertha. At least we know where
the marriage to Lieving came from:
Funeral services for William Asbury Casto, 79 years old, were held from the
Otterbein Church on Monday afternoon with the Rev. I. J. Mccollum in charge
and burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Casto died at his home in Evans
on Sunday after an illness of one year. Surviving are the widow, Nellie
Casto; three daughters, Mrs. Fannie McCoy of South Charleston, Mrs. June
Oliver of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Mrs. Camaretta Hoschar of Wellsville,
Ohio; three sons, Gus Casto of Cottageville, Denzil and Leonard Casto, both
of Wheeling; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Scarberry of Evans, Mrs. Lillie Stover
of Evans, Mrs. Bertha Lieving of Akron, Mrs. Luella Flowers of Columbus,
Ohio, and Vennie Casto of Cottageville; two brothers, Wall Casto and Earl
Casto both of Evans, 21 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. (Jackson
Herald - Friday Aug. 29, 1947)
This William Asbury Casto was the son of Mason & Emmaretta (Bennett) Casto.
I have seen Mason referred to as "Jeptha Mason" but on the 1850, 1860, 1870,
1880, 1900, and 1910 census, as well as his marriage and death records, he
was listed as "Mason Casto".
Another point of interest to some Casto researchers: Some may have the
Bertha, daughter of Mason & Emmaretta, as being married to Oscar Woodard.
However, we can prove this is not the case because Bertha is living with her
parents on the 1900 census, and Oscar and Bertha Woodard are on 50 census
pages away!
Found George Lieving, 23, born Jackson Co. on June 17, 1916, married
12-25-1940 in Jackson Co., Pearl Prochnow, 17, b. Akron, OH. George was the
son of Edgar & Bertha Lieving. Peal was the daughter of Carl & Anna
Prochnow. Source: Jackson Co. Marriages 1940-1949, p. 6
Edgar Lieving, 29, born Mason Co., m. Lula Gillespie, 27, b. Jackson Co. on
Sep. 8, 1898. Source: Jackson Co. Marriages 1880-1900, p. 248.
Another interesting search led to Dallas Frederick Wilson, 29, married May
21, 1938 to Reva Marie Hutchinson, 21, daughter of Carl Hutchison. Dallas
was the son of Bertha "Living", (mother remarried). Source: Jackson County
Marriages 1926-1939, page 106. This made me look for a marriage between a
Bertha Casto and a man named Wilson. That led to....
Bertha Casto, 20, b. Jackson Co., married July 17, 1901 Charles F. Wilson,
20, born Jackson Co. Source: Jackson Co. Marriages 1901-1925, page 6.
So sometime between 1909 when Dallas Wilson was born and 1916 when George
Lieving was born, Bertha Casto Wilson married Edgar Lieving. There were
many Lievings in Mason County and it could be that the record is there. I
suspect that after George Lieving married Pearl Prochnow in 1940, the family
moved to Akron, OH because that is the residence listed in William Asbury
Casto's obit in 1949.
Did all that make sense to anyone?
