Although the name is indexed as Casto, in looking at the actual census page, I see it has
letters crossed out so it's really hard to tell what the name is. My first thought is
that it was Cox. However, I looked for George Hallum in 1860, and found what I hope is
him:
1860: Eve, Monroe, Arkansas
Caleb Cooper 51 SC
Elizabeth Cooper 33 TN
George Hellums 18 KY
Martha J Hellums 9 Ark
Jefferson Hellums 16 "
Elizabeth Hellums 14 "
Sofronia Hellums 7 "
Algerene Cooper 3 f "
Charles J Cooper 6/12 "
In looking back at the 1850 Arkansas census, I'm guessing this is Elizabeth, Thomas
Jefferson and Sarah Elizabeth Hallum:
1850 Bolivar, Poinsett, Arkansas
Family Number: 172
Andrew Hallum 41 TN
Elizabeth J Hallum 26 TN
Jane A Hallum 7 KY
Thomas J Hallum 5 Ark
Sarah E Hallum 3 Ark
And this just might be Caleb Cooper, with a first family:
1850 Smith, St Francis, Arkansas
Family Number: 178
Caleb Cooper 38 SC
Deborah Cooper 38 SC
William W Cooper 15 SC
Missouri Cooper 12 SC
James C Cooper 8 SC
Melissa Cooper 6 SC
Medora Cooper 3 Ark
In 1860, I do not find a Thomas Casto but in 1860 Drew Co, Arkansas, I do find a Thomas
Cooper, age 60, born NC, as was the Thomas "Casto" from the 1850 census. Perhaps
Thomas was a Cooper, or his wife was a Hallum, maybe even George Hallum's grandmother
or aunt? Considering, she and Andrew and Elizabeth Hallum were all born in TN, it's
one good option.
Either way, I'm pretty sure Thomas was not a Casto.
