Obituary from the Nov. 26, 1937 Edition of the "Jackson Herald" - Jackson
County, WV.
Diabetes Proves Fatal To Aged Farmer of Given
Funeral services will be held for J. P. Casto, better known as "Pres" Casto,
at the Fairview Church near Fairplain at 11 o'clock on Thursday and burial
will be in the church cemetery nearby. The Mays Funeral Home of Ripley
has charge of the arrangements for the service.
Mr. Casto died at the Staats Hospital in Charleston shortly after 1 o'clock
Tue. morning after being a patient there for the past two weeks. Diabetes
and complications resulting from the disease caused his death.
He had been in ill health for some time and about two weeks ago it became
evident that his condition was fast becoming alarming and was deemed advisable
to take him to a hospital. He gradually became worse, relatives said, and
death had been expected for several days.
A native born Jackson Countian, he engaged in farming in the Parchment
section until ill health forced his retirement some time ago. He was 73
years of age and one of the widely known citizens of that section of the
county.
The body was brought to the Mays funeral Home in Ripley, early Tuesday
morning where it was prepared for burial. It was taken to the Casto home
Wednesday afternoon where it remained in state until Thursday morning when
it was taken to the church for the services to be held.
He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Inez Casto and the following children,
Mrs. Effie Reynolds, of Ohio; Mrs. Lonnie Dillon, of Rockcastle; Mrs. Audra
Starcher, of Given; Mrs. Lessie Hickel, of Given; Luther Casto, of Given;
and Okey Casto, also of Given. 4 brothers, T. D. and W. S. of Given; E.
E. of Dunbar; and S. O. of Ripley, Rt. 2; 2 sisters, Mrs. Florence Moore,
of Rockcastle and Mrs. Mary Holland, of Racine, Ohio.
