I am in Joseph's line and it is a confusing one. Joseph was married to at least three
times to white women, as well as had sibs by other Native American Indians. The white
lines are easy to trace but the Indian lines are not due to them not being counted in Tax
Rolls, Census, or other legal documents. Keep in mind that Joseph was 1/2 Shawnee as
Jacob, Sr. (1717 PA-1789 VA) married Sowege, or "Gliding Swan", a Shawnee of PA.
Joseph (1753-1787 VA) married first Geminey Hensley April 17,1786. To them was born
Sarah Castle (ca 1786-ca 1876 VA). This is where the line gets sticky. Joseph had no
male heirs (legal) and you probably wonder how Joseph's line is recorded with him
being half Shawnee. It is validated in VA land records that he owned land and witnessed
land transfers and deeds as was Jacob, Sr.. Also, he married white ladys and the
marriages were recorded in church records, etc. Well, Sarah married Samuel Salyer, Sr and
at this time Joseph's line was broken to!
my line; however, Sam and Sarah Castle-Salyer had a daughter (among other sibs) named
Anna "Annie" (10/27/1826-03/07/1907) who married a cousin, Henry Castle
(08/16/1823-08/26/1908) and the Castle line was picked up again. Anna and Henry had 13
sibs, one of which was Jasper Castle, my gggrandfather. Joseph married Eunice Powers and
they had Hannah, Ester, Lucinda (b1812) and Malinda "Lindy" (Unk-07/30/1914).
Lucinda married William Salyer (b ca 1821-ca 1880) had 11 sibs. 1900 Census states she is
head of household with nine sibs living. Malinda was first wife of James Salyer and was
still living in 1900 Census. Hannah married (19 May 1861) to Jesse Salyer (ca1831-Unk)
and had 10 sibs. Ester marrier (13 Feb. 1857) to Jeremiah Salyer (ca 1833- Unk). They
had 7 sibs. There is a wonderful book written by Elizabeth Salyer, who is living on the
land Anna and Samuel owned and on which they are buried, called "The Salyer
Family". Castles, Salyers and Stapletons are inter!
twined throughout the book. The first Salyer to settle in SW VA did s
o on Jacob, Sr.'s land as the only title Jacob had to it was through an Indian trade.
Hope this helps. Email me and we will discuss more of the line.
Good luck hunting,
Bryce W. Castle
