JOHN CASTLE
John Castle died at his home at Eleventh and Higbee, in Idaho Falls, at the
age of 71 years, on Tuesday, March 31, 1914.
Mr. Castle was born in Kent, England, and began life as a farm helper, joining
the navy at the age of 16, where he served ten years and came out with
honors. He helped take the Taku forts in China in 1862 and had some
experience with pirates. Being one of the captain's boat crew he had the
pleasure of traveling through Jerusalem. After his navy experience he put in
two years as a merchant seaman. He emigrated to the United States in the
early seventies and was one of the first to volunteer to make the trip from
Utah to Arizona, known as the Arizona mission. Mrs. Castle was the first
white woman to cross the Colorado river near what was later known as Lee's
Ferry. He came to this valley in 1887 and has made his home here ever since.
He was a member of the old Lyman ward (now Archer) for many years, at which
place he was active in all church and recreation doings, and there the funeral
and interment took place.
