Your Samuel P. Castle is very likely from Litchfield Co., CT, and very likely from one of
the following towns: Plymouth (Northbury), Waterbury, Watertown, Woodbury, Roxbury and
this vicinity.
I ran across a similar problem searching for Eliza Castle m. Chester Potter, with the same
migration pattern: Plymouth CT to Oneida Co., NY to Ashtabula OH (and then on to
Illinois). A very large contingent of settlers from Litchfield Co., especially the
Plymouth area, migrated to Camden & vicinity between 1792 and 1800 (some later).
Around 1807-1815, large contingents of Plymouth residents migrated to Ashtabula Co. OH,
probably as a result of the opening of land in the Western Reserve.
The only reference that I could find in my research notes to a Samuel Castle that is
consistent with your info is the following: b. April 24, 1777, son of Abisha Castle and
Miriam Bradley. Abisha (b. Jan 26, 1738) was the son of Isaac Castle and his first wife,
Tapher Warner. Isaac was an early settler in Waterbury CT, before 1723, and arrived from
Woodbury CT. This information is from the book, "The History of Waterbury
Connecticut" by Henry Bronson, publ. 1858, pp. 482-483. Isaac's ancestry is
posted all over the internet, and most of it is reasonably accurate.
One of Isaac's brothers, Phineas, had many children, and a number of them removed to
Camden NY. He also had a son Samuel, b. Nov. 3, 1784, who married Sarah Brockett and
removed to Camden. Is it possible that Clarissa Deming is Samuel's second wife? He
was over 30 when they married, which seems late for this era.
Isaac and Phineas had other brothers, but the 1858 History does not list any other
Samuels. The father of Isaac & Phineas, Henry Castle, lived in Woodbury and had other
sons, but the 1858 History shows very few of their children, probably because they did not
live in Waterbury.
My Eliza Castle is almost certainly the daughter of Abisha's brother, Amasa Castle,
who also migrated to Ashtabula with his son Amasa Jr..
Hope this helps - good luck!! Nancy
