My Castle family research has focused on Eliza and her Castle ancestors, and in checking
my notes, I could not find any "Charles Castle, " possibly because I did not
record the rest of Amasa Sr.'s family or their descendants..
About 1809, Amasa Sr. joined his son, Amasa Jr., in Ashtabula. The son had migrated the
prior year. Amasa Sr. had other children, one of whom was probably Daniel, who also
appears in Ashtabula. Amasa Sr. died in 1826. Amasa Jr. married Rosalinda Watrous in
Ashtabula in Jan 1813 and they had 6 children. Amasa Jr. was born in April 1786 in
Plymouth (formerly known as Northbury) CT, and died in Ashtabula in Dec 1870. There is
quite a bit of info on this family on the web. Surprisingly, the LDS website is a good
place to look for info on how your Castles are connected to the Ashtabula Castles.
You might want to check out the Ashtabula Co. GenWeb site - it is really pretty good on
data, although I would like to see more of those local histories that were so popular
after the Civil War.
Another connection that you might want to explore is the Blakeslee family connection. My
Potters migrated with Blakeslees & Castles across the country, from CT to NY to OH and
on to northwest Illinois. There was a distant branch (which I haven't really traced
since the relationship is very distant) that can be found in Chicago in the 1840s (the
name is Loyd Blakeslee, if I recall correctly). Your Charles Castle might have migrated
with that group.
Also, for some reason, the early Blakeslees seemed to drill their children in family
history, and I have uncovered lots of info on my Potter family by exploring Blakeslee
connections. It seems that the Castles, Blakeslees and Potters, among others, were a
close knit group in CT. They were among the earliest settlers in Plymouth, which probably
forged that closeness.
This is about all I have on the Ashtabula Castles. My Potter family moved on to NW
Illinois around 1831, and I have very little info on Castle relatives after that time.
Hope this helps - good luck!!
