Sent for veterans records for S. P. Castle in the hope that he might have served in the
War of 1812. Struck gold. He had indeed served and the papers also mentioned
Clarissa's maiden name. Also the fact that Sam had been found dead in the barnyard in
1833, but no entry for such death was made in her bible. Samuel P. was drafted at Vernon,
New York. He served briefly in Capt. Aashel Warner's Company, New York Militia,
Company C. 12th Cav. (Boughton's). He appeared on muster rolls and pay rolls for
period Dec. 1813 - Jan. 1814. Possibly he did not serve any longer than this 30 day
period. The Roll was taken at Batavia, New York. He was honorably discharged at Sasketts
Harbor, New york, which appears to have been about 70 miles from his home in Veronon.
Sam was found dead in the barnyard of his farm on 2 Dec 1832. The farm was in Sheffield
and he was buried in Kingsville.
About 1814 Samuel P. Castle and his wife, Clarissa Deming (1790-1875) migrated to the
Western Reserve where they had a farm in Sheffield, Ashtabula County
The Ashtabula Genealogical Society suggests that Samuel P. Castle and Clarissa Castle were
early settlers. (See article from History of Ashtabula County).
